Belly button infection? (TMI)

(Anonymous) 2016-03-15 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yesterday I had been sitting at the computer for a while, got up, and noticed my belly button hurt, sort of like the skin had been burned. It had a sort of red ring inside it near the edge, with some dried pus, and more pus farther inside.

I put some hydrogen peroxide on it and cleaned the pus away. Today the red ring is still there, but no more pus.

I am overweight, and wondering if maybe this came from my belly button being sort of... pressed shut when I'm sitting down? It felt like it hurt less after I'd been standing up.

I googled "infected belly button" and got a bunch of sites about home remedies and stuff, not necessarily legit medical stuff.

Has this happened to you? Does it go away quickly?

My stepbrother had something like this when he was a teenager. I was pretty young, but I think the doctor determined it was a fungal infection, from not drying his belly button after showering? We live in a humid climate.

Try keeping some fresh gauze on the area, change it periodically? See if that helps any. Or if it keeps up/gets worse, see a doctor.

Keep it clean, and see a doctor soon. Unless, of course, your symptoms worsen. Then, seek immediate medical attention.
There are all sorts of nasty bugs out there, and Googling them all will only confuse and sometimes scare people. Above all, don't diagnose yourself.
Good luck.

Sounds like you could have hurt yourself without noticing or the skin splitting open, causing a small infection, thus the puss. I'd say keep disinfecting the wound and use anti bacterial soap whenever you wash yourself. Also go see a doctor so they can give you an antibiotic.

I think doctors don't advise the use of hydrogen peroxide for cleaning up wounds because it can cause tissue damage and slow healing. Just water and a mild soap should be fine.

Monitor it for a while and pay attention to whether or not there's inflammation, pain or more pus. If you're absolutely sure it was pus, then it means your body is fighting off some sort of infection. Maybe there's a small breakage in the skin in your bellybutton that's difficult to see? Keep it clean and dry. If you're concerned, a small dab of antibiotic cream smeared around the edge/inside ought to help.

I don't think merely the act of being squeezed shut can cause this, but the fact that the belly button is typically a dark, humid environment means it's a good breeding ground for bacteria and subsequent infection.
