Music. I know, I know, people should listen to whatever makes them happy. Most of the time I subscribe to this, but occasionally I have a dark moment and wonder why the fuck people don't listen to genuine musicians and stop giving their money to samey generic bullshit.

Out of genuine curiosity, and because I'm always looking for new music, can you post some examples of music by people you consider "real musicians?"

Beautiful sadsack lyrics the likes of which I'm always in awe of. He is my absolute favourite musician:

This album has an intrinsic goodness to it that makes me feel better about things:

Valerie June (and her marvelous hair):

Just plain fun:

Hiss Golden Messenger is sublimely moody:

Yeah, I'm a bit like this too. I have a friend who pretty much only likes pop music. And not just, like, P!nk and Lady Gaga's coolest albums. I'm talking the kind of tooth-rot pop I am embarrassed to have listened to when I was fourteen. I try not to actually roll my eyes or make snarky comments in his presence, but it can be a challenge. Especially because any time I put on anything I find remotely cool, he gets bored in about ten seconds and just talks over it.

I don't have the coolest taste in music by any means (I know all of about two songs by Radiohead, and I enjoy Snow Patrol and Augustana, which probably means I forfeit my 'cool taste in music' card by default). But when someone's genuine favorite songs are by 1D and Justin Bieber, I can't help but judge.
