My opinion on this really depends on whether OP owned the clipboard

Yeah I can't tell if this was a paper that someone had set up on a booth or table or something for people to write on 'a la yearbook' and OP took it when it 'wasn't theirs', or how it exactly went down.

Still, it seems such a small thing for the author to get so angry over, and even more for OP's friend to rat them out.

Maybe it was a small thing, or maybe the people who contributed to it thought of it as some group project/souvenir. I can understand being ticked off at someone taking off with it.

I can understand being upset if it was something you had put on your booth to create a souvenir of your being there, totally. But going online and calling someone out as a thief and the OP's friend throwing them under the bus over it seems like it's way over the line for a piece of paper, souvenir or not.

OP

It was a clipboard put up by the hotel for people to leave messages on for other con-goers. It didn't belong to anyone. (Although I did double check it would be okay to take the piece of paper in question with the hotel staff, as technically it belonged to them.)

OP

The clipboard was a big A3 one put out by the hotel staff to use by con-goers. The idea was to leave messages for other people.

I actually checked with the hotel staff whether it would be okay to take the paper before I did. If I hadn't taken it, it was headed for the trash.

The whole thing was absolutely fucking ridiculous. And the fact that I hadn't done anything wrong by any stretch of the imagination made the actions of my 'friend' hurt even more.
