I can understand feeling resentful about that. Worrying about fandom cliques is such a dumb thing, they always disappear after the fandom's heydey ends. It's a ridiculous thing to hurt a friend over.

Probably should have photocopied the page and given one to anyone that wanted one though.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-15 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Why? They didn't take something that belonged to anyone else or was a official part of the gathering; they took something that was theirs. And now their supposed to poll everyone who passes all "Yo, did you write on this? Let me spend my money to make you a copy!"

I'd say OP would be being generous but by no means required to bring the paper home, scan it and put it online for anybody who wanted it, but given the way fandom turned on them, I sure as shit wouldn't give a fuck.

It would have been a nice thing to do. You can make a dozen copies of something for like a dollar. They wouldn't exactly be starving because they made copies. If they were that hard up for cash someone probably would have chipped in. It's not like people that can afford conventions are usually in the bottom socioeconomic class.

Wow, that's stupid. I'm sorry :/

I feel like this is carefully phrased to leave out some important information.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
OP

Stripped of identifying details such as which con. Also left out some details so as not to overload the secret and make it TLDR.

Woah, what a shitty thing for them to do.

the author's friends declared whoever had taken the paper as a 'thief'

Also the levels of bullshit from this reaction alone over a piece of paper are beyond the bullshit charts.

My opinion on this really depends on whether OP owned the clipboard

(Anonymous) 2016-03-15 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I can't tell if this was a paper that someone had set up on a booth or table or something for people to write on 'a la yearbook' and OP took it when it 'wasn't theirs', or how it exactly went down.

Still, it seems such a small thing for the author to get so angry over, and even more for OP's friend to rat them out.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it was a small thing, or maybe the people who contributed to it thought of it as some group project/souvenir. I can understand being ticked off at someone taking off with it.

OP

The clipboard was a big A3 one put out by the hotel staff to use by con-goers. The idea was to leave messages for other people.

I actually checked with the hotel staff whether it would be okay to take the paper before I did. If I hadn't taken it, it was headed for the trash.

The whole thing was absolutely fucking ridiculous. And the fact that I hadn't done anything wrong by any stretch of the imagination made the actions of my 'friend' hurt even more.

This secret is making me realize that maybe it's not such a bad thing that none of my friends are into the stuff I am into and that my fandom experiences irl have largely been solitary endeavors

Damn. I'd still be pissed too.

Wow, sellout is shitty shit.

(Especially since scanners and fax machines existed in 2006. It would have been so easy to scan the paper and send it to the author, backstab-free.)

OMG how petty.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
What just slays me is the OTT "OMG HDU THIEEEVVEEEEES" reaction to - what, a piece of paper on a clipboard?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. Just wow.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Say no more. That fandom really needs to just keel the fuck over already, everyone still in it is worthless.

I swear I've read fics written by someone with this icon. Was it avocado_love or something? It was SGA or something in that vein.

Anyway, your friend should've had your back no matter what, OP.

I wonder what they wanted to do with the list otherwise... I'm not sure they had photocopies in that event. Maybe they wanted to take a photo of it or gift it to the writer. Idk.

Yep! She's moved off to AO3, but she still writes fics I think. She's moved on from SGA to Marvel.

OP

Took me a while to figure that out, but I do know that now. Thanks.

(Would just like to point out that my secret has absolutely no relation to the person you mentioned. The avocado is a reference to the fic, not the fandom or the author. )

Thief for taking the paper, or thief for writing down quotes? Seems like a stupid thing to complain about either way. Sorry about your friend, OP.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
Popular fic...

Powerful fan clique...

An... avocado...

Cassie Claire and the Draco Trilogy and your friend sold you out to get in the Inner Circle?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Good guess but no, not Cassie Claire. Thankfully I never got involved with anyone in that clique.
