When it comes to people of my own generation (born in the late 80s/early 90s), I don't know which I find more suspicious: the ones who've never read Harry Potter, or the ones who haven't read much else

Some people your age have stupid parents who wouldn't allow it. Some people don't like easily digestible fantasy. Some people ONLY like easily digestible fantasy. Nothing wrong with any of it.

I've never read Harry Potter. My best friend only reads Harry Potter. Which one is more suspicious?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't want to run into either one of you in a dark alley.

It sounds like people have to consume hp and other books in the correct proportion. Is there a formula to determine it?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
What about those of us who read a lot and tried to read Harry Potter, but quit because we hated it?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm curious about this too. I tried to read Harry Potter on four seperate ocassions, but haaaaaated it.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
This is me. Tried it, couldn't get into it.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-20 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
That's nice.

I've never read Harry Potter, but please don't tell the government.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I was born in the mid-80s, and for me, the entire reason I've never read the Harry Potter books is that they came out DIRECTLY after my favorite book series ended, seemingly forever. Those books had also taken place at a school and also (sometimes) involved witches and other supernatural elements and I just felt like I'd already had my version. I'd had my "fun" in that type of a literary environment, and felt it was time to move on.

After all this time though, things like Harry Potter just don't interest me. Turns out I don't like much of the fantasy genre (I'm not a LOTR or GoT fan either.) Doesn't matter what age group it's directed at, it's just not for me.

Yeah, so suspicious, those of us who were sick and tired of everyone their age talking about an overhyped, mediocre series of books.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
i only read the first book

where does that fall on your scale?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry OP. I tried to read Harry Potter, but I got about 100 pages into the first book and I just couldn't bring myself to give a damn about Harry, which didn't bode well for the rest of the series.

Isn't it pretty much impossible for people of our generation to have only read Harry Potter? I've been to school in 3 different states across the U.S. and there was always that AR reading program where you regularly have to read books from the library and take tests on them. The more 'complicated' the book the higher the points they were to reach your goal for whatever your reading level was. Since I always scored high I had to read a lot of different books I wouldn't normally read.

That was elementary and middle school though. It never went on to high school which is also probably why I stopped reading books as much. I still do if I can find a good one, but HP was easy to get into as a book so I don't blame people who only read that.

I'd be more suspicious of the people who've never read anything but Harry Potter, no question about it. Because the people who haven't read it may well have read bunches of other books. I don't believe that not reading HP means you've missed out on a life changing experience, any more than not reading any popular or "classic" book means something negative about a person.

And I can tell you as someone who HAS read the books: they've made little to no impact on my life, positive or negative. If I hadn't read them, I'd still be the same person. They're just not that important.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
And reactions like this are part of the reason why I don't WANT to read it. People get so bent out of shape when I mention it and it's really funny.
