I haven't seen Zootopia, but the plot line of having the bad guys be brain washed reminds me of the Wachowski's detoothing of V For Vendetta by having the government lie to get elected in the movie, whereas in the comics the public knew they were shitlords but elected them of their own free will because they wanted to be protected.

People do things they know are terrible and they do it of their own free will. On one side of the world it might be extremists joining terrorist groups. In America an example is people freely voting for Donald Trump despite the awful things he has said he would do as president, just because they think he might 'Make America Great Again', which is such a vague statment that in their minds it means solving any and every problem they're facing, structural or not.

(I know the movie V For Vendetta was transparently a comment on Bush Jr era neocons, but Trump seems a pretty appropriate IRL analogue atm)

Trump's bad but he's not ISIS-level.

Yet.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yet what? Is he planning on shooting kids or throwing gay people off of buildings?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
What? The evil sheep weren't brainwashed, they deliberately attacked the predators to destabilize the city. That was their whold plan.

The predators were brainwashed.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. They were the victims of the sheep's crime. The bad guys knew exactly what they were doing.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I know but if the predators are metaphors for Muslims then they're equating people who commit acts of terrorism on their own volition to victims who are only dangerous because they're being brainwashed by someone attempting to start a race war.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like you're being incredibly literal without any room for interpretation here.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
It's not even a case of being 'incredibly literal'. Prejudice exists against predators in 'Zootopia' because they are being set up by a third party attempting to start a race war. The predators are 100% blameless. The metaphor falls apart when given even the slightest scrutiny.

It's like 'Elysium' where he have the rich in space hoarding all the resources while the Earth suffers as a metaphor for how the US handles things when in real life the US is dumping billions of dollars into foreign aid.

Stop assuming all Muslims are terrorists and you might be able to understand the premise of a children's movie. It's a movie about prejudice, unjustified fear, and evil sheep taking advantage of that. You idiot.

You're a sheep, aren't you?

I'm trying to think of an animal that best fits an ignoramus who confuses religious ideology with race.

No one's saying "all" Muslims are terrorists. But those that are do so without being brainwashed via berries.

You do know that the berries were totally a fantasy element to give the police bunny something she could solve right? The causes of radicalization or other criminal behavior aren't something that can be tackled that easily... instead the movie was about how fears can be overblown, and yes how some people will take advantage of racial/religious fears.

A statistically small amount of predators were going bezerk, and there was no reason to crack down on the whole, that was the point... not the berries
In real life, it's not as simple as locking up a few masterminds... but for a kids movie it can be.

If you're going to take on a real life issue you shouldn't give it a sugarcoated answer. Hunchback of Notre Dame managed to take on religious bigotry without giving a deus wx machina to solve everything.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Given that they turned Phoebus from a cheating lying scumbag to a noble warrior, made Frodo a judge instead of a priest to avoid pissing off religious groups and added a saintly priest who wasn't in the novel I'd say HOND isn't exactly the best example of Disney not sugar laying an issue.
