I missed the point of your secret. Want to try explaining again?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-20 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Why? It's fantasy, using it to comment on an issue you know well and feel strongly about while avoiding issues you don't feel equipped to handle is actually pretty reasonable.

Maybe it's a matter of different cultures. I'm used to thinking in American terms, where class and race have each other in a stranglehold. My understanding from Harry Potter fandom is that Britain separates it out more.

Yeah, that's definitely a pretty American way of thinking. Class and race issues in other parts of the world aren't mutually exclusive, but they aren't typically inextricable from one another the way they are in the US, either.

Particularly when we're talking about a fantasy AU, in which they can be built to be exclusive of one another.

Yeah, mte. What's wrong with specifically talking about classism? Also classism was a big deal during that era whereas sexism wasn't seen as one by many people and racism was kind of a moot point in a totally non-integrated society (which is of course a problem in itself though I have to wonder what the non-white population was in London at that time, it can't have been huge).

Basically, I think it makes sense and there's nothing wrong with it.

Welp now I have a new webcomic to read. Thanks OP :)

Seconding.

I think this is a cultural thing. Classism has arguably been the primary driver of British society for hundreds of years, and is still an unavoidable undercurrent within Britain.

This isn't to say that racism isn't important, or that the two are totally separate. But if you're going to make a commentary on British society, classism really is the central plank of inequality that needs addressing. Everything else hangs off that in some fashion.

Perhaps the artists and/or writers feel like they don't have enough experience to tackle racism in their comic and don't want to try and end up doing it poorly?
