I don't really get the passionate hate people seem to have for him. What has he done? He's mostly kind of meh for me, though he was good as Ren. But people just get so passionate about hating him and I don't get it at all.

I dislike that even someone as ugly as him still manages to have hordes of fangirls, when there's no way in hell a non-white or non-male person with his features would ever get fawned over.

Basically he represents a lot of the ugly things about fandom.

There is no objective standard for what people find attractive or what is attractive. He may be ugly to you, but not everyone agrees. If you stop thinking of attractiveness as something objective, it would probably make you a lot less angry.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
He is objectively ugly tho.

[personal profile] philstar22 2016-03-23 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
No. There is no such thing. That is not how it works.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
You can keep saying that, but that doesn't make it true.

Maybe just admit you want his dick, Lord knows you whiteknight him hard enough.

I'm not actually attracted to him. I wouldn't say I find him ugly. I'm more meh about him.

And where do I whiteknight him? Liking a villain character is not the same as whiteknighting him. He did awful things and he's an awful person. I find him interesting.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
You whiteknight Adam Driver in like every secret that criticizes his looks.

"not attracted to him" lol sure you aren't.

I defend anyone who people call objectively ugly. Because I hate that term because I don't think there is such a thing. I don't care if people find him attractive or not, but it really pisses me off when people call their own personal tastes objective.

I do it more with him because people seem to hate him more and talk about him being "objectively ugly" a lot more. But I'll do it for other people too.

you seem weirdly invested in whether or not philstar wants to hang Adam Driver, anon

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Do you seriously believe that a woman or non-white person with his features would ever get the time of day? Seriously?

[personal profile] philstar22 2016-03-23 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
If they were villains, yes, though maybe not to the same extent. Of course race is a factor and gender. It always is. But so is the fact that he's a villain. A lot of people really like villains.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
But why would that make you hate Adam Driver? Is Adam Driver responsible for institutional racism and sexism?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I never said I hated Driver?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
You know that there are objective standards of beauty among humans, though, right? Just because people are still attracted to those who fall outside of those standards doesn't mean that the standards don't exist.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Objective standards of beauty exist if you think of things like symmetry, balance of features etc. but those vary from culture to culture and as such are not globally objective at all.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
How about you fuck off. The fact that someone as ugly as him still has fans gives me hope that maybe someone someday will be able to look past my ugly face and appreciate me as a person. He is exactly what we need, more successful ugly people that can inspire others.

You're a shitty person. Instead of asking for people to appreciate ugly women and PoC, you're asking ugly white men to be bashed for their looks. That's disgusting. So again, fuck off.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
HEAR, HEAR!! Beauty is only skin deep, and all that. Find the PERSON inside the skin. It's not a hard concept.

Anon, hugs from me. Be all beauty on the inside. It'll shine right out.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
lmao Adam is that you? Sorry about your deformities :(

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
OH WON'T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE POOR WHITE MEN???????

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Some are tired of Loki/Snape clones and fandom's predictable reaction to them -ie- woobifying them and demonizing the morally good characters. I've seen Kylo fangirls throw Han, Rey, Leia, Luke, and Finn under the bus to absolve Kylo of any wrongdoing and responsibility. It's like the people who demonized Thor to make Loki seem innocent all over again.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
But those are all problems with the fans, not the character (and especially not the actor).

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
The character is generic and represents many things I dislike about fandom. Sorry if that bothers you?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Different OP to the one above.
How is the character generic? And what does it have to do with the actor?
Why can't you understand that people have different tastes in what they find attractive?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Broody emo boy with self-control and daddy issues who thinks he has a "cause," but has a limited understanding of what he's actually fighting for? We're not exactly breaking new ground here. Kylo is basically Zuko if you take away most of what made Zuko complex. He's Draco Malfoy in the last half of the Harry Potter series. He's Superboy-Prime. He's at least a third of the Marvel Universe. Hell, he's Rule 63 Mara Jade.

Whether or not a cliche character is interesting comes down a least partially on the actor that plays him. If the actor doesn't do anything to elevate the material, then that has everything to do with the actor.
Why can't you understand that people have different tastes in what they find interesting?
