I expect a lot of writers are fans of the characters but not a fan of the current plot on the show. So, they either stick to older plot events or AUs.

This fandom has always had an unusually high proportion of AUs even back to the early seasons. But I think there is also enough fics set in the canon universe as well. I was always able to find something I wanted when I was interested in the fandom.

Some of my favorite fanfics of all time have been Supernatural fanfics. And I've read a LOT of fanfic. SPN fandom is huge and varied.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Somebody explain this to me???? they are so samey and generic looking. what is the appeal?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Really, it's the canon scenario. They met after Castiel, an angel, literally pulled Dean out of hell (he'd sold his soul to save his brother. Dean didn't believe in angels or God (but his job is stopping evil creatures like vampires, vicious ghosts, etc.)

They've been at odd and are now friends, but they have a "profound bond" because of their unique relationship. Dean used to have Castiel's handprint burned into his skin.

There are a shitload of AUs just because there's so much fic, period. There's a lot of canon stuff as well. (Dean has been a demon in canon, Castiel has been human, etc. There's a lot of crap to explore.)

Maybe it's because Cas lost so many fights early on, but everybody seems to forget he's a fucking warrior angel. He flew into Hell and pulled Dean out while others in his unit died. But no, fandom has to make him a shrinking flower of a nerd.

He lost against more powerful beings, but he was still clearly powerful. That first scene made that clear even if nothing else did. He doesn't understand humanity or human culture, but that isn't the same as being weak. So I really don't get it.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Holy shit, yes. There are a dozen scenes at least which show him as incredibly powerful. I think that the whole "weak Castiel" thing is partially the fault of the writers, who constantly removed his powers, put him up against stronger fighters, or removed him from the show so that the villains could constitute a legitimate threat.

Dean: "Oh no, there's a wendigo in town!"
Cas: "I killed it immediately in 2 seconds."

Then it's just 40 minutes of credits.

Haha, true; Cas at the top of his game would wipe out most threats that might challenge the Winchesters. To keep any kind of suspense, they need to depower him one way or another.

I SHARE YOUR HATRED OF UNTAGGED AUS

Especially untagged modern day AUs.

I still ship them but I haven't read fic for them in a looooong time, mostly because I don't watch the show anymore so I'd feel like I wouldn't understand any canon-based fics.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Oh wow. Are you me, OP? I love AU fanfiction but when that's all there is it just gets so tiring.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Untagged AUs *shakes fist* I feel your pain, OP.

I ship it, but I haven't read fic in ages. Just haven't been in the mood.

Supernatural sucks.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad to find out that I'm not the only one who finds this really frustrating.
