Batman question!

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I am not in the superhero fandom at all and my only experience with Batman is the 1960s Adam West/Burt Ward version. My question is, why does the current Batman sound like he smokes 3 packs of unfiltered Lucky Strikes a day? Did something happen to his voice or is it part of the character, or the way the actor chose to portray Batman's voice?

The Animated Batman from the 90s had a gruff rough voice, but in natural amounts, and because he was so iconic every Bat-Actor since has tried to out Bat-Gruff them leading to farcical levels of Bat-vocal damage. I mean it is canon that Batman uses a different vocal range as Bruce Wayne, but in the name of "realism" it is taken to ridiculous levels in recent films.

Bale, and to a much lesser extent Afleck in Batman v Superman, are the only ones who give him a roughed up voice. And it's for the same reason, also the same reason Kevin Conroy gave him a deep voice - to make Batman sound different than Bruce Wayne. Both for the viewer - it helps follow the narrative if it's made perfectly clear which headspace he's in - and for in-universe reasons of making him harder to identify.

Most voice actors who do Batman who aren't Conroy attempt to follow his lead, except when the game or show is specifically trying to invoke the feel of the Adam West series.

It's been established in the comics that Batman actually disguises his voice when he's in-costume so nobody confuses him for Bruce Wayne. It also makes him seem more intimidating, or at least that's the intent.

The problem is that each new iteration is a little more Flanderized than the last. Kevin Conroy's voice acting for the cartoons and video games is iconic, but Nolan's Batman films really cranked up the gutteral factor and most depictions now follow from that trend.
