Oh my jolly goodness, yes. Apt timing, too.

I also think a lot of people don't understand how RT works. It's not "Is this movie 99% or 30% good", it's the % of this small amount of critics who liked it.

And even then, it's the site itself that gives the fresh or rotten rating for most of the reviews - some may border upon good and get hit at will.

OP

+1 to your last paragraph. RT has no idea whether reviews that are 2.5 stars on a 4-star scale should be "fresh" or "rotten," and which gets marked as which is pretty arbitrary.

Why is it apt timing? What's going on? What's the hot goss?

Mainly the kerfuffle around Batman Vs Superman's reception. It's not solely RT, but there's a lot of discussion about why exactly critics didn't like it, if their expectations were a little different or suited to Marvel ect.

I think in many cases, it's just stans being stans. It doesn't matter if a film is good or bad, if people like it, if its close to their hearts, there will always be certain folks in the group who view any kind of criticism (justified criticism, trolling, or anything in between) as "How very dare you attack something that I personally love!!!!111!", as if it's a personal attack. Not that it matters or makes a difference to anyone else but to them it's life and death, practically. And that's just stans for you.

I think real fans can accept that their product has flaws, but these people are real fans so (does that fall into the No True Scotsman fallacy?). Like I love The Lego Movie, but i've seen people call it loud, overly stimulating, too bright, and backtracks on its message, and I may not agree but I don't get angry if someone says it.

OT but

I just wanted Wyldstyle to stay with Batman and not be gifted to Emmet :( I mean aside from I hate the hero "getting the girl" all the time, but the thought of Batman with her was just hilarious to me.

Yeah, that was ridiculous. I hope the sequel lampshades that with "Ha what a shitty trope".

If they actually did that, I would forgive them for everything.

Many could be marketing socks. Grae Drake was just saying on Kidd Kraddick this week that RT tries really hard to verify the ratings and raters to "protect the integrity of the Tomatometer," because studios are freaked about bad publicity and are constantly bribing RT to mark something Fresh when it sucks. Wouldn't surprise me if they do like Amazon reviews and plant false positives on the big titles.
