You did a good thing. Thank you.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay stop, I know you're trying to make everyone hate feminism for being responsible for things like this. Then again you're probably the OP, too.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay no. Fuck you.

Guilting people to watch something that gives them PTSD and hurts their health "for the cause" is a shitty and honestly self centered thing to do. If you really cared about rape survivors you'd be telling them to take care of themselves, not put themselves through something triggering for the sake of ratings.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
No. Using a guilt trip to put someone through their own personal hell is not a 'good thing'. IDGAF what your cause du jour is, there is NEVER a good reason to make someone feel obligated to put themselves through that.

No they didn't.

No one owes it to anyone to trigger themselves and make themselves sick over a goddamn tv show.

I mean,if they wanted to do it for themselves, sure, but watching it on ~principle~ is humongous bullshit.

And this important show for rape survivors that needs more viewers is...? Title please?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Jessica Jones.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
This secret is really bizarre to me. Is this a "must give it ratings" thing? If so, why didn't you just turn it on and leave it running in another room?

You could have always muted it and left it on in another window if you really wanted it to get your viewcount?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
You...didn't have to actually watch it for your viewership to count. And it was pretty popular from the start, so it's not like its success hinged on you watching it...I mean, I'm sorry that it triggered you and everything because I'm sure that was difficult but this is so odd to me

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think you should have to put yourself through trauma just because something is apparently important socially. You need to look after your own health too.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Am I the only one sort of skeptical? I mean as mentioned by people above, if it was "for the cause" you can just turn it on and mute it and go do something else. Nobody's tracking your eye movements.

When I watched the show I understood what exactly was supposed to press peoples' "rapey" buttons but it felt really constructed. I always wondered if it worked on actual survivors, and not just people who went in looking for "problematic" stuff.

(I liked the show because I found Kilgrave and his ability to turn everyone into awkward accesories hilarious.)

Next time, just let it play unattended, OP.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-26 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Could you not have it playing but mute it and leave the room? Then they still get the view counts but you're not affected so badly.

Wow.

No, I don't think you have to do that. But I understand.

A lot of people are asking you why you didn't just let it play (so it got the ratings without your suffering), but I get it. I felt a lot of social pressure to watch this show too, especially in communities (such as my school) where I'm known as a feminist. I don't think there's anything feminist about women/anyone being pressured into a distressing experience regarding rape and abuse just because the zeitgeist demands it and tumblr/upworthy-style "if you don't like/participate in this thing you are EVIL" social (media) pressure.

Also, it's hard not to be a masochist sometimes.

But you deserve to take care of yourself. You did not ask to be a part of the survivors' club. You didn't sign up to be A Survivor. You don't owe anybody jack.

You know, you could have just put it on two episodes at a time, muted your speakers, and not actually watched it. There'd be another tick in the audience column, and you wouldn't have hurt yourself. Everyone wins.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-26 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
It can be a story worth telling but you personally are not obligated to watch. Any person survivor or not doesn't have to watch a show that would disturb them. Please don't force yourself to watch any more/anything that would hurt you again. And don't feel guilty about looking out for yourself.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-26 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
You could alternatively support the first ever female-centered Marvel thing that doesn't by default feel the need to make the character a trauma survivor, when it happens.

I'm sorry you went through this OP. I understand wanting to watch the show. I did too. Thankfully I had a good friend who was watching it and sent me spoilers of anything that might be triggery. I also actively sought out spoilers where I could find them. I think it also helped that I'm into comics and had some knowledge of the characters, beforehand. I watched it slow too, if it got to be too much I stopped it and went and did something else or gave myself a break from it before going back. I wanted to finish it. I wanted to know what happened next, but I had to take care of me too.

Please take care of yourself. Please don't feel obligated to put up with triggers. I hope you're feeling better.
