Can you give an example?

I think there are times emotion has a place, even in logical thinking.

No idea if what you're talking about would apply there or not though.

I once saw a self-proclaimed "rational animal" lay out in flowery pseudo-logical language why he thought it was wrong for someone who was born with a penis to wear women's clothing. Simplified and unveiled, he was only interested in flirting with someone who could bear his children, so he took personal offense that people who could not bear his children would dress in a way he found attractive. This is my impression of a lot of "rationalists" on the Internet to a greater or lesser extent--it's not really about being rational, it's about finding ways to to phrase your arguments such that people will not be able to make rational counterarguments, meaning that you "win" because they were "irrational." (See also: people who argue in support of genocide, then declare that they won because everyone who responded to them was angry at them.)

I was actually going to say that I've often felt the opposite of what the secret says (that people prefer rationality to emotion to the point that they discount the opinion of anyone expressing emotion, even if they aren't acting/making arguments based on their emotions), but I'm pretty sure what I've encountered is what you've described here. To a lot of people, it's only important that you APPEAR rational (explaining everything, staying calm) even if your arguments are based on your personal feelings. Then they immediately discount the opinions of anyone who appears emotional (being angry, crying, etc.) even if that person's arguments are based on logic and they just happen to care enough to become emotional.

I guess I wish people understood the difference between expressing emotion and making arguments based on emotion, and the difference between being calm and actually using logic.

Ok, yeah, I've argued with people like that before. And there is no way to argue with them rationally which is pretty ironic.

The first example that came to my mind was Life on Mars-- Gene Hunt does everything on emotion (vengeance, passion), openly operates on hunches and broad assumptions, etc. And because Sam comes from a time where the police is more more bureaucratic, he views himself as a very logical person when it comes to the cases. But the showrunners go on to prove that while Sam's procedure is more regimented, he's just as emotional as Gene. They're just different emotions (compassion for victims, his 21st century views on social justice).

Honestly, I couldn't name a counter example. So far all the people I met who claimed to be rational just lacked self awareness.

In my experience, there is no such thing as a rational person. There are more or less detached perspectives you could take on any given issue, and I often do think you've got a lot to gain from more detached ones, but frankly, nine times out of ten, detachment is more a function of privilege rather than rationality. It's fun and often useful to treat certain issues like intellectual parlour games, but not a luxury many people have.
