Characters You Grew To Like

Either you hated them or were indifferent to them at first but slowly you grew to like them; who are they and what changed your mind?

Skylar. She started out annoying but got way better at Breaking Bad went on.

Steve Rogers! I hated the first Captain America and then his portrayal in Avengers was terrible. The Winter Soldier was a complete 180 for me on his character.

Gimli, Cirdan, and Ulmo. I never hated them but they weren't super interesting either. I think some of it was definitely shallowness on my part; none of them are described as super hot.

But now that I'm older, I definitely love all of them. Gimli is actually a really amazing character. Cirdan was everywhere and has a super interesting history. Ulmo is the only Vala who remains engaged in the First Age. They're all really cool actually.

Draco Malfoy. Up till the sixth book, he was just a one-dimensional evil bully in my mind, then all of a sudden he was conflicted and crying in bathrooms! I still don't think he's a nice character, certainly not one I would get along with were he real, but once he got interesting I started to like him quite a bit.

Agreed. He was much more likable (or at least relatable) once he grew a characterization.

Kitty Winter on Elementary. I haaaaaated her when she showed up, but they did a good job of integrating her into the cast (I especially liked when she worked with Gregson). And that last phone call with Sherlock was so devastating. I couldn't believe I was crying over the exit of someone I used to roll my eyes at.

Ohh, yeah! I was really wary of her at first and she was so abrasive, but they did such an excellent job with her that I was really happy she was introduced and sad to see her go.

Evidence "Evi" Ryan on Haven.

I didn't trust her at first, and she was presented as somewhat of a minor antagonist, but the more I think back on her character & her contributions to the show, the more I like her. She was always interesting whether I liked her character or not, so that certainly helped. There's nothing worse than a boring character.

Also, to a lesser extent, Mr. Peanutbutter on Bojack Horseman. I didn't care for him at first because he's introduced as a low level antagonist, but he's become my favorite character. He's so optimistic, it's infectious. He just makes me smile.

This is kinda silly, but now that I nanny all the time I really appreciate Sushi from paper mario. She's so great!

Britta on "Community". I didn't hate her or anything like that, but I just didn't quite know what to make of her when the show first started. But I very quickly came to love her, and could relate to her a little here and there as time went on (with the snarkiness and struggling to sort her life out a bit and that sort of thing).

yukari from persona 3.

ironically, it was the answer that changed my mind, but for most people that's what makes them hate her even more.

Fredricka "Freddie" Lounds. From huge irritation to fan squealing in three seasons.

Boromir from LoTR. The first time I thought he was a bit of a tool but many rewatches of the movie(and reading the books again when I was older) gave me much more appreciation for his character and how badly the ring was influencing him and these days I find his death both touching and sad.

Feanor has grown on me as has Curufin. I used to hate them but now I understand them a bit. They are still awful, but they are interesting to me in a way that makes me like them.

I used to be kind of meh on Galadriel. I found her a bit boring. But now she's a favorite.

I disliked Ron Weasley for a long time, but now I like him. I think I had to see his whole journey to like him because I really hated him after Goblet of Fire.

Londo is another character who I had so see the entire journey to like. I really hated him in seasons 2-4. It wasn't until season 5 that I finally liked him.

Ezekiel on The Librarians. Amazingly well done by the writers and actor...he's still a shameless asshat but somehow I love him now?? Everything that used to frustrate me now charms me?? Magic.

Gaara from Naruto. I didn't like him in the beginning, but he got more sympathetic as the series went on and he's one of my favorite characters now.
badass_tiger: Charles Dance as Lord Vetinari (Tyrant)

Bertie Wooster really grew on me. I thought he was just the typical idiot character, but I fell in love with him as I found out he was so much more than that.

Drumknott had to grow on me too. It's just that he was such a minor character that I didn't notice him at first, but the more interested I became in Vetinari, the more interested I became in Drumknott too.

Morrigan! I like her so much better in Inquisition than I did in Origins. Her character development is A+.

Also, Shaun from Assassin's Creed? He kind of just came across as a dick in the first couple games he was in, but I liked him a hell of a lot by AC3. Maybe I can just tolerate jokes about America better than jokes about Europe/the Renaissance.

Butters from Dresden Files. I mean, I never hated him, I was just kind of indifferent (as much as you can be indifferent to a guy whose one-man polka band can raise a zombie T-Rex), but the most recent book... every so often I remember he exists, smile, and say, "Fuckin' Butters <3<3<3" (note: do not mean this in a sexy way, more a "that fuckin' guy" way, realized it could be ambiguous)

Tim Riggins from Friday Night Lights. At first, I thought he was just the stereotypical underachieving jock, but I think somewhere in season 2 I really began to appreciate that he had his his moments of caring. As thr seasons went on I thought his character grew and matured realistically.

Norrington

He was kinda funny and snarky in Curse of the Black Pearly, but I didn't really NOTICE him until he turned up scruffy and hot in Dead Man's Chest.

Bruce Wayne/Batman. Back in the day I just thought "oooh look at me I'm so edgy with my batcape and my batmask and my emo eye shadow ooooh" but as I grew, I ended up appreciating him as a character. Specially seeing as he's a normal dude in a world of super heroes.

And I guess confession time? I really hated what Nolan did with Bruce's character. Specifically when Bruce lashed out at the rich folks at the party. My memory is blurry about it but isn't Wayne Enterprises getting money for charity and shit? That's Bruce Wayne's job, to appear as a callous rich guy in front of the crowd while he does his job as Batman. I really liked about that about him because it was a good way to hide his identity. And don't get me started on the third movie where he goes all TROLL IN THE CAVE bullshit. But again my memory is quite murky aside from explosions and stuff going down.

Oh and I forgot Jean from SnK. I dropped snk back when it got into politics, but picking it up again now that they are back to the titans plot and I love how he's grown so much. I mean, I didn't hate him back in the day but I thought he was just going to be that guy who antagonized Eren in the series. Thank goodness it's not like that. He became my fave during the Female Titan arc and he's grown as his own character and I hope he lives through this whole mess.

It wasn't so much that I hated or was indifferent to the character, but Neal Cassidy (no, not the inspiration for Dean Moriarty. The OUAT character) Intellectually, I knew he was the same character as Baelfire, but it took me seeing him interacting with his son before I went "okay, I like this guy," and until, well, mid-season 3 before I shipped him with Emma. Talk about bad timing.

Captain Picard. I thought he was boring at first but now he's my favorite character in ANY version of Star Trek.
