Nirvana fans

(Anonymous) 2016-03-27 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
So I missed the Nirvana boat and have never actually listened to them. Then one of my favourite musicians covered one of their songs, and it seems to have ruffled some Nirvana fans' feathers. I really like the cover, but maybe that's because I don't know the original. Is there anyone who likes Nirvana here who can give me their opinion? Youtube comments are a shitshow...

It's okay. And if people about a song being covered in a different style, they need to get over it.

Thanks for your opinion! Yeah that guy has done genre-switching covers before, and I think a lot of the hate is coming from people who aren't familiar with his music.

Re: Nirvana fans

(Anonymous) 2016-03-27 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, yeah, that cover sucks. It's like an odd combination of country and big band or something. What's with the horn section?

Re: Nirvana fans

(Anonymous) 2016-03-27 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
As a Nirvana fan:

The song standing alone isn't terrible, but not my genre.

The song as a cover of Nirvana loses everything that once made it meaningful.

So yeah, it's not a bad song, I guess, if you're into that stuff. It's a terrible cover that turns loses almost all of the original intent, but that's another thing. The original was kinda like "lol everyone sucks and shit is petty but fuck it lol" and this one is like, weird and meditative and accepting or something. Wow.

Re: Nirvana fans

(Anonymous) 2016-03-27 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. It sounds... happy-go-lucky? Which was actually something Kurt did as well, but there was always an edge to it, and this cover lacks edge.

Re: Nirvana fans

(Anonymous) 2016-03-27 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. The point of the original In Bloom was that teens don't give a shit about anything important and don't understand the consequences of anything and they just want to fuck and look at pretty things but that's how the world is so fuck it lol Spring is here

This one is... not.

It's the cover equivalent of if Johnny Cash's Hurt had been about someone's broken leg. Might be a good song by a good singer, but missing the entire point.

Re: Nirvana fans

(Anonymous) 2016-03-27 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a good analogy.

How do you take a song that begins "Sell the kids for food" and make it that? I feel like I should be having a slow dance at a hoedown.

NA

I agree with what you're saying here (both about this cover and, in general, about Hurt). Except that ironically, Johnny Cash's version of Hurt was a cover. It's actually the perfect example of a cover that goes the opposite direction to Simpson's - it brings sincerity and weight of meaning to Reznor's original track.

OP

Wow, I think that's probably the first time Sturgill Simpson's been described as 'lacking edge'. Well, he does do a lot of psychotropic drugs so maybe he was just too high when arranging this cover lol.

Re: Nirvana fans

(Anonymous) 2016-03-27 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I think by edge, anon meant edge as in an edge of anger or bitterness.

It sounds psychedelic for sure, but the original song was really bitter and this one sounds like it's all good bro just relax.

Re: Nirvana fans

(Anonymous) 2016-03-27 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
OP

Oh, fair enough then. Although towards the end of the song he ramps it up quite a bit, and it loses its 'bro relax' feel, which is a thing Sturgill does often in his songs.

Well, I'm glad you like it, but I think it's boring and obnoxiously twangy. Guess I never grew out of that "I hate country music" phase. Then again, I was a grungy teen Nirvana fan in the day, I can definitely see why feathers are ruffled.

Re: Nirvana fans

(Anonymous) 2016-03-27 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Ruffled feathers over THE WORLD and LIFE and other annoyances that stifles the artistic and emotional life of teenagers is the default mode for Nirvana fans, so I wouldn't put too much into it. (Oh sorry, not a Nirvana fan either, sooo.)

Re: Nirvana fans

(Anonymous) 2016-03-28 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
What. No. Nirvana's music was a mockery of hivemind mentality.

Re: Nirvana fans

(Anonymous) 2016-03-27 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha. I'm the exact opposite, never saw what was so great about Nirvana. It's weird, because I actually like all the band members, but I never understood why they were at the top of the charts for almost half the nineties. And whenever I hear a Nirvana cover, I prefer the cover to the original.

That said, I don't know this song very well, but it sounds like the musician at least put a lot of effort into it. It sounds fine to me anyway. Not super great, but I don't hate it.

I can appreciate some covers of Nirvana songs (I do like Otep's version of "Breed"), but this, just no. It sounds nothing like it, plus the original is harder sounding so turning that down for something more country is such a huge shift. I'm not big into Nirvana, I can't stand "Smells Like Teen Spirit," but I did hear them on the radio as a kid and have some positive associations with them.

Re: Nirvana fans

(Anonymous) 2016-03-28 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's fine. It changed up the way it was sung and played and all... but covers do that. I don't get why there'd be a fuss. (other than your regulars who like to complain about everything)

I personally don't like it as much as the original.

Christ hahahaha that sounds like something you'd listen when high. Okay commenting as I listen and I think this sounds a bit too... "happy" so to speak? It's not bad but it's definitely different from the original ANGRY tone from the original.
