Moviesplaining

(Anonymous) 2016-03-28 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I was talking to a non-American recently who didn't understand why we like baseball. I told them to watch "The Natural" and "The Bad News Bears". That was just my instant, almost reflexive reaction.

What are movies that make clear why something is good or appealing? Movies that explain a culture to people outside it? Movies that you can point to and say "Yeah, it's like that."

Conversely, are there subjects or cultures you'd like to understand better, and are looking for recommendations?

Intensely smart kids: Real Genius. The only movie I've ever seen that gets how brilliant and fucked-up and obsessive and hilarious hardcore nerds really are.

I grew up in the town that Hot Fuzz is based on. Gun fights, car chases, proper action and shit aside - it is pretty much a documentary of life in the West Country.

That's... actually really good to know. Thanks.

Collateral is the best explanation of nihilism I've seen, cutting in both directions as it addresses how nihilistic beliefs are misused.

I certainly would like the Scots to point me to a movie that explains why they're willing to share an island with people who like cricket.

Also, I've said this recently but it bears repeating: A Scanner Darkly is an amazingly strong indictment of both the War on Drugs and drug culture.

Can I use baseball bats? Those cricket bats are far too wide.

I'm going to take 'nonsensical reply because dethtoll has nothing to say to an actual Scot after making offensive generalisations' for ten.

You told me to go fuck myself. I'm asking questions about how I should go fuck myself. This isn't hard.

Cricket is basically the same sport as baseball in terms of its fundamental appeal. Theyre really close cousins and if you can understand one you can understand the other.

I've had multiple people try to explain it to me but I still don't get cricket's appeal or even the game itself.

Conversely American football is impenetrable to me compared to soccer or rugby. There's also an added resentment factor which doesn't help.

I'm being really serious when I say the appeal, at least from what I've seen, is the same as baseball. Like, most of the same elements are there. Same historical focus, exciting plays, more or less similar paces, same appeal of spending a nice day outside with some beer, same kind of fandom. So sometimes a match goes five days, but that's not that far off from a four-game series in MLB.

The rules are a little more complicated to explain (although I think it's understandable to anyone who knows baseball, and I'll probably try and post an explanation when I'm not on a phone). But in general, as to the appeal, just assume that it's the same things that draw you to baseball.

To me they're both games with bats, balls, trying to hit a certain target with the ball and trying not to let the ball hit, and the batter running, and everyone else scattered around the field trying to catch the ball when it goes off woop-woop.

But I'm not a fan of either game, I just live in cricketing nation.

A Scanner Darkly is amazing. Dick gets a lot of praise for the stuff he wrote while he was messed up on drugs, but I think he was at his best soberly writing about what drugs did to him and those around him.

Absolutely. It's a pity he never lived to see Blade Runner in its entirety; he saw a preview of it and was so excited, and then he died. :/

I was so young when I watched that movie that I don't remember anything about it except it had baseball, a fence, a very large dog, and a bunch of elementary-aged white boys. lol

I don't mind baseball (though I've never heard of The Natural or The Bad News Bears) but I doubt there's a 'perfect' movie for everyone that can explain to them why YOU like something. Just because everyone's so different.

You can't just plunk them in front of a film and say, "And this is why I like X".

There are probably better Japanese high school movies, and better punk rock movies, but Linda Linda Linda is a pretty good movie about the intersection of Japanese school clubs and punk rock, if you are interested in either of those things.

Contact, but I'm not sure what it is I think it explains to people. Maybe my "science feels?"
