46. i've only ever had good experiences when guys find out i play video games. although maybe because it comes as a total shock to them that i even own a ps2? i dunno. xD

my best guy friend signed my yearbook declaring that, 'plus you like video games and how cool is that? i mean, girls never do.'

): i'm sorry you get sexist shit for it. <3 hope you meet the awesome guys who like that you're a girl.

'plus you like video games and how cool is that? i mean, girls never do.'

that is kind of a sexist comment though
sexism doesn't ~magically~ go away because you're not the target of it

Re: 46

[identity profile] shampoo.livejournal.com 2008-03-13 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
it's not a sexist comment, it's a stereotypical one. he wasn't saying that girl gamers suck or that he doesn't like them-- he was saying he didn't know any girl gamers.

Re: 46

(Anonymous) 2008-03-13 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
a negative stereotype based on a person's sex is... sexism. OMG.

the attitude "girls NEVER play videogames" is a)stupid and b)really untrue, and anyone who says otherwise is either 12 years old or an asshole, tbh

Re: 46

[identity profile] shampoo.livejournal.com 2008-03-13 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
it's a misunderstanding on his and a lot of people's parts, good god. and it's also c) an EXAGGERATION. his girlfriend at the time played video games too, thanks.

i'm sorry that i took it as a compliment that he was surprised and pleased that as a girl, i played video games and was good at them. even if it is stereotypical to assume girls NEVER play video games, and even if it is sexist to assume girls SUCK at video games, you can't deny that girls make up a very small minority of the gaming community.

Re: 46

(Anonymous) 2008-03-13 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
your comment makes no sense; did you read it over before hitting 'post comment'?

also lol shouldn't you be masturbating to the freetheelves wank or whatever that psychos name was?

Re: 46

[identity profile] shampoo.livejournal.com 2008-03-13 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
a: it makes plenty of sense. i just made a few grammar mistakes. i don't bother editing shit like that in a comment.

b: that has nothing to do with the gaming secret.

oh and:

c: that situation blew over a while ago. the dead horse is done being beaten, thanks.

Re: 46

(Anonymous) 2008-03-13 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
no you pretty much blatantly contradicted yourself. read it over again.

Re: 46

[identity profile] shampoo.livejournal.com 2008-03-13 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
where did i blatantly contradict myself? i agreed that those things were stereotypical, and that the assumption that girls suck at video games is sexist. but i still took my friend's comments as a compliment because girls are a rarity in gaming, and plus, he didn't mean it negatively even if it could've been misconstrued that way. how is that contradicting myself?

Re: 46

(Anonymous) 2008-03-13 02:41 am (UTC)(link)

Re: 46

[identity profile] shampoo.livejournal.com 2008-03-13 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
that wasn't rhetorical. i don't see where i contradicted myself and i'm asking you where i did so i can fix it and stop feeling like a retard.

Re: 46

(Anonymous) 2008-03-13 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
it's also incredibly condescending. it's like if someone said "you can drive well AND you're asian? that's so cool!"

i don't want to be treated differently because i'm a girl, positively or negatively. i just want to play.

Re: 46

(Anonymous) 2008-03-13 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
this comment ftw

Re: 46

[identity profile] shampoo.livejournal.com 2008-03-13 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
okay, that statement's understandable, fine. whatever. i was saying that i personally had never gotten any rude reactions for being a girl gamer and i thought that was what your whole secret was about. the end.

Re: 46

(Anonymous) 2008-03-13 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
is condescension and use of stereotypes somehow NOT rude now? you learn that stuff in grade 2

Re: 46

[identity profile] shampoo.livejournal.com 2008-03-13 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
the intent behind what the person's saying is what makes it rude.

listen, i don't even know why you're so fantastically pissed at me. i'm saying that the reactions i've gotten, i don't consider sexist. and i felt bad from the beginning that you have to deal with shit for being a girl gamer. i'm sorry for whatever i said that offended you so much. :/

Re: 46

(Anonymous) 2008-03-13 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
i'm not pissed at you... at all? i just think you're silly and not making a good case for yourself.

Re: 46

[identity profile] shampoo.livejournal.com 2008-03-13 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
you've been giving off a generally offended and pissed-off attitude since like, my second or third reply. i'm not trying to defend the entire gaming community or whatever. i'm just saying i don't interpret what's been said to me as sexism. why do i need to prove that and why does that make me silly? :/ i mean, gaming isn't this huge passion of mine so maybe i'm less concerned about what people say to me about it. i don't know.

Re: 46

(Anonymous) 2008-03-13 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
i think your first mistake is assuming every anon is the same person

Re: 46

[identity profile] shampoo.livejournal.com 2008-03-13 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
well, considering how fast the replies had been coming and it was only /one/ anon reply per my reply for the most part (not all, i'm not that retarded), it's a logical assumption. sorry. =/

Re: 46

(Anonymous) 2008-03-13 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Because stereotypes are so awesome.

Re: 46

(Anonymous) 2008-03-13 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, as a crazy avid girl gamer, I figure I should say something.

I spent years going to gaming conventions, on Live servers, in MMORPGs... I still do these things regularly. I've never felt I had to /hide/ my gender to be taken seriously save for once or twice with immature trolls on X-Box Live.

I don't think that surprise at someone's gender counts as sexism. I mean, if I met a straight guy who designed clothes, I'd probably be just as surprised as some of the guys are at chicks who play video games. You have to admit it's a statistical anomaly for a girl to be playing most video games (and if you want to argue that, then you should probably take another look around you).

Yeah, the surprise gets /annoying/ sometimes, but as long as they're not saying "you shouldn't be playing video games, get back in the kitchen" or something I'm okay with that. In fact, in my experience, I've gotten /more/ respect as a female gamer than if I had as a male just because we seem to be such a rarity. And if the guys your hanging around with are telling you you're not supposed to be playing games? They're probably not any good themselves, nor do they have an ounce of intelligence and I can understand where you'd get worried. But most guy gamers I've met? They think it's pretty damn cool that a girl can play with the big boys.

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-03-13 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
You have to admit it's a statistical anomaly for a girl to be playing most video games

No, it's not. There are less girls than boys that play, to be sure, but it is by NO means an "anomaly". As one anon above so nicely put it, "it's like if someone said "you can drive well AND you're asian? that's so cool!" "
