Re: 46

Okay, as a crazy avid girl gamer, I figure I should say something.

I spent years going to gaming conventions, on Live servers, in MMORPGs... I still do these things regularly. I've never felt I had to /hide/ my gender to be taken seriously save for once or twice with immature trolls on X-Box Live.

I don't think that surprise at someone's gender counts as sexism. I mean, if I met a straight guy who designed clothes, I'd probably be just as surprised as some of the guys are at chicks who play video games. You have to admit it's a statistical anomaly for a girl to be playing most video games (and if you want to argue that, then you should probably take another look around you).

Yeah, the surprise gets /annoying/ sometimes, but as long as they're not saying "you shouldn't be playing video games, get back in the kitchen" or something I'm okay with that. In fact, in my experience, I've gotten /more/ respect as a female gamer than if I had as a male just because we seem to be such a rarity. And if the guys your hanging around with are telling you you're not supposed to be playing games? They're probably not any good themselves, nor do they have an ounce of intelligence and I can understand where you'd get worried. But most guy gamers I've met? They think it's pretty damn cool that a girl can play with the big boys.

No, it's not. There are less girls than boys that play, to be sure, but it is by NO means an "anomaly". As one anon above so nicely put it, "it's like if someone said "you can drive well AND you're asian? that's so cool!" "
