Planting dilemma

(Anonymous) 2016-04-02 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to decide between some Hollyhock (single black) or foxglove (apricot beauty) for a block of vertical plants. They are such opposite plants, I cannot decide. F!S, which would you for?

Hollyhock every time.

I can't get enough of the black ones! Also less chance of accidentally poisoning neighbourhood cats and children.

Poisoning the neighborhood cats would be a bonus, I suppose, but I do have a lot of rosemary bushes around that generally keep them off already.

Heh. Cats are the gardener's enemy number one all over. People should keep their cats indoors.

I've never had a cat problem with any garden I have ever owned/tended, so I disagree.

I've had more gripes with invasive plants around here, honestly. God damn morning glory get out of my yard.

I've never had a problem with morning glory in my garden, well not other than local druggies thinking they can haggle over the price. If they don't want my prices, they can grow their own. Cats crapping in the flower beds or lawn on the other hand...

But anything can crap on your lawn. Raccoons, dogs, deer, opossums, skunks, geese... this is not a cat-specific problem.

In this case it was cats. I know because I interrupted that fucking long haired thing from two doors down, and the night security camera has captured pictures of two others from parts unknown. The only time other animals, badger, fox, and hedgehog, on my lawn they have all been passing through. Fucking cats.

Sounds like your yard is the epicenter of some massive nightly cat territorial battles.

Spray bitter orange all over the fence?

I tried chilipowder paste spread on some of the paving they have to cross, but it only lasts for so long. Plus we are in an open plan housing estate. So no fences or walls unless you go through council planning permission committee and they almost never give planning permission unless there is a health and safety reason. Plus some of the local councillors are cat owners and no doubt apporve of their little crapping machines crapping somewhere they don't have to clean it up.

Bitter almonds, or the substance that smells like the, would be better.

Nah, not really. Cats HATE orange and citrus with a passion.

There might be some magical cat out there who will venture near an orange peel, but if there is I've never seen it.

Hollyhocks aren't toxic if ingested, but they can cause allergic skin reactions in both pets and children by contact.

...Ostensibly anything can cause an allergic reaction on contact.

Allergies are very mysterious that way.

Uh, I guess, but you'd still be smart to be wary of plants that are KNOWN for it. That's the reason why people worry less about contact allergies from shasta daisies than they do from say, stinging nettles or poison ivy.

I loved the hollyhocks at my childhood home! Hollyhocks and fresh basil plants always take me straight back to being 7 years old and playing in the backyard.
