Writing Habits

(Anonymous) 2016-04-03 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
How many words can you write in a day? What's the fastest you've ever written? Do you have any bad writing habits? How do you write? Do you need music/special place/certain time? Do you outline or write by the seat of your pants? How do you get over writer's block?

Let's talk about the writing process!

If I actually wrote a thousand words a day, I'd be happy. I can--I just don't unless I'm highly motivated by a deadline or a personal goal. I'm flying out to the Writers of the Future workshop tomorrow, and one of the things you have to do during that is write a story in 24 hours. I am so sweating this right now.

My process kind of varies by project. If I'm writing flash, I just write it. I outline shorts and novels. If I use music, it's something with a driving beat, like the Iron Man or Jake Speed soundtracks--words are distracting.

I actually find that I'm most productive after midnight. I have no idea why this is. That being said, when I was doing NaNo projects, I'd get up at 6am and scribble before anyone else was up, and that worked too.

As for writer's block, sometimes brainstorming, either alone or with someone else, helps. Sometimes I just stare at the damned thing until the words shake loose. Sometimes I start something new until I figure out what's wrong with the thing I'm trying to write--because usually "writer's block" actually means "something in this story is broken and I need to fix it before I move forward."

Can? I've written over 20 pages when I had no sleep and lived on ritalin and energy drink. Though, I generally do not like doing that to myself anymore.

Sometimes I write chronologically, sometimes I build around certain scenes. For larger bodies of work I have a structure sheet.

I absolutely do not want any noise when writing (though I do listen to music when thinking up characters and situations). I write best in the afternoon and evening.

Bad habits: writing other things than I'm supposed to (like fic when writing original stuff)

Howdo I get ovetr writers block? Badly.

It really depends. My muse seems to come and go. I tend to write short thing. I have a general idea of where I want to go, but I don't really outline. I generally need silence and alone time to write.

The most words I've written in one day is 8000, but that was a fluke. Usually I write a couple thousand at most.

I can write about 6,000 words in three to five hours on a good day.

I guess the fastest I've ever written is ...4,000 words in three hours?

I can't listen to music with words or sundtracks when I'm writing. It's got to be instrumental with no distracting ties or silence.

I have written 10-15 pages in a day (I can't even tell you how many words that could be) but that's pretty rare - a weekend day when I actually have something to write and all the time to write it. My average best days are about 5-8 pages.

Lately, though, I've been under enough stress that it's really sapping my creativity. Sometimes I'll open up the fic I'm working on and stare at the same page for two hours, and then close it without writing a word. Sometimes I can squeeze out a paragraph or two but that's it. I'm hoping that in May, when this event is done, I'll find my creative streak again.

I don't like having to rely on something to push me, like music or a certain place, but when I'm really blocked and need to force through it, a little mindless music (old favorites from the 90s, nothing that would thematically or atmospherically affect the fic) and sitting in my room or the office helps. But I don't like it, I want to be able to sit and write on the couch while my partner watches tv or plays games like I used to.

Oh, and I totally write by the seat of my pants. I used to write more like a jigsaw puzzle - I'd write whatever scene was in my head and then insert it into the overall narrative when and where it worked - but lately I've been writing linearly, scene by scene, with only a handful of notes in case I thought of something that needs to be said or done in that scene.

My record of word count written in one day was ~7,400.
