There was definitely more than one secret/conversation about this topic, anon...people do act like they're entitled to fics being finished. Not everyone, but enough people for the topic to get pretty wanky at times. Hell, there's some of it going on in this very thread.

Also, I honestly think you are overreacting more than OP or the specific secret you were talking about (assuming we're talking about the same one - wasn't it last week)? Like holy hell you just totally jumped down OP's throat

How many WIPs do you have open right now that you feel the need to personally chastise every person in this thread that you disagree with? The OP of the secret last week that this one is specifically referenced flat out admitted that they knew the problem was on them, several other commenters piped up to say things along the lines of, "yeah, WIPs sure can suck if you have OCD or other anxiety disorders, here are some coping methods." Apparently, this person was so offended by the idea that people with anxiety orders exist and read fic that they needed to post a response secret accusing them all of being speshul snowflakes who need to get a life, and you have decided to be that person's biggest cheerleader. Go shove your pompoms up your ass and fuck off already.

This secret isn't specifically referencing any other secret, anon. And come on, I've made lots of comments on this thread (because it's an interesting thread) addressing several angles of the issue. While I generally agree with OP, there are other factors and I see both sides of the endless "who is more entitled, readers or writers" debate. My response basically depends on who is acting really extreme, and in this thread, it's the readers who are largely acting really extreme.

It is not a crime or even a bad thing to post part of a long fic and then decide later not to finish it. Nobody deserves to be attacked for that.

And no, I'm not going to stop making comments about opinions I have. It's what this kind of forum is for. You do not have to read them.

NA

This secret is specifically calling out that secret aand making fun ot if though. And it's doing it in the most snarky, privileged, disgusting way possible, basically calling you defective if something small happens to give you anxiety. The secret being referenced wasn't wanky or nasty, and specifically noted that they knew fic authors don't "owe" them anything. They went out of their way to state that. They weren't mean. Or nasty. Or entitled. Just simply stating something they were embarrassed to talk about un-anon.

And yet this person got SOOOOO pissed they had to make a nasty secret about it. Yeah, this other anon is definitely upset, but in my opinion they have a damn good right to be. I don't personally get anxieties about fics (no my brain has wayyyyy too many other OCD related things to bother me about, like whether I left the stove on even though I haven't used it in three days, that sort of shit), but it's certainly something easily within the realm of getting some anxiety about, just like some people get anxiety when their favourite published series hasn't seen anything new in awhile.

It's pretty obvious that this secret is in DIRECT context with the one from a week or two ago, and it is a massive overreaction full of malice and spite. OP needs to get off their high horse.

No? It says secrets, plural. People post secrets about hot-button fic topics all the time.

While it's likely that one secret was all or most of OP's motivation for writing this one, we really can't prove it, and it doesn't mean their opinion/reaction didn't already exist before that.

You have the "right" to be anxious about anything and as long as it doesn't cross into entitlement territory I don't see the problem. Do you inform your favorite authors that their failure to complete a series they've been working on is triggering your anxiety? I doubt it. That would be a really unfair thing to do, because it's making them emotionally indebted to you for something that was theirs to begin with.

And I'm really not seeing any malice or spite. Some snark in the last bit but it's honestly way milder than some secrets that don't get this level of vitriolic response. Malice though? Really? You must be squinting pretty hard. There's a reason they're fandom SECRETS - people think things like this in their head all the time (I am no better than OP and neither are you); it's not the same as saying it directly to someone to whom you think it applies.

"Wtf? How do you get through life? Get over yourself and grow up."

Yup, nothing hateful or vitriolic about hurling that at someone with a mental illness.

I can't figure out if you're actually that thick or if you agree with OP that mentally ill people just need to stop being babies and act normal.

Those are literally the only two reasons for your behavior in this thread: ignorance or hate. Which is it?

Or maybe it's that I - as a person who also has mental illness, btw - feel very strongly that one person's mental illness is ultimately thei own responsibility and no one eles's. I am not mocking people for having them or telling them to snap out of it. But it's ridiculous to imply that a fic author has a responsibility to cater to someone else's anxiety when writing or posting fic, and they aren't even doing something really careless like leaving out major trigger warnings.

OP could have been nicer, but again, there is a reason stuff like this is posted as a secret. I think their frustration with other people acting entitled and emotionally blackmailing fic writers over WIPs is understandable. They weren't being hateful towards mental illjess, in my interpretation (correct me if wrong, OP?) but rather exasperated and snarky towards a particular subgroup of people as defined by their choices - not even a subgroup, really, as people who do not have mental illness, or have an illness that has nothing to do with their fic reading experience, also do this.
