I chuckled at this irl.

LOL yeah! I'm not sure if I ever actually thought anyone was saying "Mom" when they were really saying "Ma'am" (although I might have when I was a kid - I don't remember, but there's certainly a lot of potential for me to have misunderstood characters' familial relationships there!) but occasionally I'll hear "Mom" and it will take me a second to translate.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-04 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
wait...they are??

(Anonymous) 2016-04-04 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
RuPaul, on the other hand, they are definitely calling MOM.

Yes, because Mom would be Mum.

But this secret is so cute.

I'm always really surprised when Americans don't know this!

(Anonymous) 2016-04-04 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Please, don't think we're all this stupid.

I'm American and I had no problem figuring it out. But keep in mind that "ma'am" is not a typical mode of address in many areas of the U.S. You might hear it more in the South, but less often in the North. And it's not usually used in a professional context. People are unlikely to call their female boss "ma'am".

James Bond was what made me realize I was making OP's mistake--but only when someone besides Bond called M that because then it seemed like less of a joke.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-04 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. You're an idiot.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-05 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Or maybe English isn't their first language? I know it must be totally shocking for you to learn that people outside of America and Britain watch movies too, but what the heck, you were going to find out sooner or later.

I could have made this secret. lol For me I was watching Happy Valley and I thought it was just something that the police did with a female superior since everyone was saying it so casually. And then it clicked.

[personal profile] philippos42 2016-04-05 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Same.

Mind. Blown.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-05 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
That kept throwing me off in Skyfall. Are the agents all calling M "mom" as some cutesy in-joke?

Oh my god same, I was like "is it just a British thing to address the Queen as "mum"???? Weird yet kind of charming???" and then like five years ago it hit me that it was "ma'am".
