political pet peeves

(Anonymous) 2016-04-08 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
they're pet peeves, but political

People whose only argument is "you can't argue that because it's wrong."

Yeah, that's compelling. My mind has been forever changed.

when people call a work feminist because it has female characters doing stuff

it's such a weird thing to say because imo feminism is political activism not a cast of characters

it's like saying a book is very vegan because it features animals that don't die

Re: political pet peeves

(Anonymous) 2016-04-08 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I think it might qualify if the female characters are doing something feminist or taking feminist actions or dealing with feminist issues - as a feminist issue, not as a personal issue for someone who happens to be female. A book could be very vegan if its story dealt with the meat industry for example

When politicians heavily imply something, but because they never said those exact words, they never said what everyone is accusing them of saying, like everyone is an idiot that couldn't grasp what they obviously meant.

I'm from Iowa, and I HATE it when politicians come to my area of the country and immediately act like they're so "down-home and folksy", and talk about us being the "real America" compared to the coasts (because apparently people from Iowa and people from New York or California can't POSSIBLY share the same values, I guess) and other crap like that. That kind of pandering is so obnoxious.

It's even more embarrassing when some of my fellow Iowans, as well as others in "middle America", fall for that crap.

People who don't understand the First Amendment.

YES.

And think their interpretation of it only applies to them.

"I don't like what you said, and I can call you an idiot for having an opinion because freedom of speech!"

I mean, how does that even work?!

???????

That's exactly how the First Amendment works. Anyone can call anyone an idiot on the Internet and not get arrested. It's what makes America different from any other country in the world. In Britain right now, you can get arrested for tweets.

Ugh yes.

Re: political pet peeves

the First Amendment has to apply to everything, not just the stuff we like, otherwise there's no point in having it.

I thought of one, yay.

People who insist there are people who hate Hillary Clinton just because
she's a woman, but refuse to accept that there are people who support Hillary Clinton just because she's a woman.

Either gender matters or it doesn't, you can't have it only your way.

The fact that saying someone's name in a sneering tone is considered humor! And a good argument for why they suck!

Outside of a few truly terrible people, it doesn't work in a thinking society, which shows how little society does think, sometimes.

And frankly the people who are that horrible? Do their victims deserve them to be a huge joke??

My political pet peeve is that I know someone who won't support Bernie because of Bernie Bros. For fuck's sake, this isn't fandom. You can't decide the annoying fans have ruined the canon for you, because in politics that has consequences outside of you. I'm surprised and disappointed. I thought this person was smarter than that.

I follow both Hillary and Bernie (and I'll vote for whoever gets the nomination). Hillary's emails always refer to me as 'friend' and it drives me crazy. "We need your help now, friend", "Did you see what Bernie said about me, friend?", "It's time to get read, friend".
I like her, I'll support her, but please stop calling me 'friend'!

Cultural libertarianism and the alt-right. It just blows my mind how fucking UGLY they can be, and the words and slang they use (like "cuck" and "cuckservative") are breathtakingly soulless in their casual cruelty.

What is cultural libertarianism supposed to be?

There are plenty of cultural libertarians on the left. The illiberal left has created them by becoming the mirror image of the religious far right.
