Book club

[personal profile] diet_poison 2016-04-12 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
May poll is closed.

The winner was "Pounded In the Butt By My Own Butt" by Chuck Tingle.

Apparently this is a short story, not a novel, so what do you guys want to do? Please leave feedback here.

Options:
1. Only read BItBBYOB
2. Only read the second-place book
3. Read both

This is complicated by the fact that second place had a tie (Wild Swans and Maurice), according to the finished poll page after closing it. However the stats page I pulled up shows Wild Swans as a clear second-place with two votes after Maurice. We could go with that if you guys want to, but it may be a fluke, not a clear-cut winner.

Please let me know what you would like to do.

ADDITIONAL OPTION: we can choose to limit future books to those within a particular word range/above a particular word minimum, to eliminate short stories. I am leaning towards doing this myself to avoid this situation in the future, but I'd like to hear your feedback on this as well. If you want to implement this, what would be a good range/minimum?

Please comment!!!

Voting for both.

As for the other, what about a monthly word count maximum instead? So if two short stories end up being #1 and #2 we could read both. It also has the benefit of not allowing huge novels that are too long for everyone to get through in a month.

Hm, I feel like that's tricky because it depends on two short stories winning, and then if you have a short story followed by a novel you may not be able to include the novel. I don't think combining books into a word count is a good idea, I think it would be best to stick with one story, personally.

You think a range would be a better idea than a minimum? I suggested a range because I wondered if some books were too big for many to feasibly read in a month, though I'm not really sure.

If you want to do both for May, do you think we should do Wild Swans or have a run-off vote, based on the info above?

Runoff on second place unless the last two votes came in after the poll was set to close?

I didn't time the close, I just clicked "close". Then I looked at the final screen and it said 17% for each of the second place books. But when I looked at the stats page from my login screen, where I can view final stats for all polls I've made, it listed Swans as 7 votes and 17% and Maurice as 5 votes and I forget the number but it was less than 17 (something like 12% I think).

I vote for a range next time. Not sure what's reasonable for others because I read way more than the average person.

Thanks for the input! Any thoughts on what to do about May?

Option 2. I'd read any of the other stories.

When is the discussion for April?

April discussion date TBA but it'll be as close to the last day of April as possible. the 30th is a Saturday, so I'm leaning towards the 29th, unless a lot of people say Fridays are bad for them too. We could do the 2nd instead - that might be better. I'll make a post about it soon.

do you have a preference for whether to do Wild Swans or a runoff vote?

I'm game for whatever the general consensus is.

I vote for #2.

Oh, and if we limit the word count, I would say 10k words? But anthologies and short story collections should count as a whole book--assuming they're meant to be read in their entire.

Hmm. I think 10k is still pretty short? The only other suggestion I've had though is for 80k which is a pretty big difference...

I agree about anthalogies and collections.

For May, based on the info above, should we go with Swans or a runoff vote?

Maybe 40k would be better then? I know that might technically fall into novella length, but there are some good really short novels, and middle grade and YA books that I think are still worth reading but wouldn't make the cut if we set it at 80k.

A runoff vote would probably be fair, just to make sure.

okay

I'm keeping a tally of responses so far, thanks

I'm okay with option 3.

I also think having a minimum word count would be good for the future. There is some debate as to what counts as "novel length," but my understanding is that 80,000+ is what publishers tend to accept.

Do you think most published novels, like the ones we've read before (I think you've been in BC discussions before? it's been a while, sorry) are 80k+? I received a suggestion for 10k above

For the second book we read, would you go with Wild Swans or a runoff vote, based on the info?

Re: Book club

[personal profile] a_potato 2016-04-13 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I have been, and yes, I think they are of that length (I would bet that 'Southern Fire' cleared the 100k mark). 10k is very short; I personally have written single chapters that are 6k.

I would be fine with 'Wild Swans.'

ok, thanks!

I thought it was you who I talked a lot about Southern Fire with! :)

Ahhhh there was so much to pick apart with 'Southern Fire!' Juliet McKenna is seriously great.

I'd be fine with option #2. Pretty much all of the options looked interesting to me, so either Wild Swans or Maurice would be fine, whatever the community decides.
