I don't get it. If they like Wincest, would Dean have to be bi in order to fuck his brother?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-18 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, "wouldn't he have to be bi."

(Anonymous) 2016-04-18 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Not if he and Sam are hit with a "fuck or die" spell lol

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
I think canon Sam and Dean would both choose the latter of those two options, rather than have sex with each other.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
That's why there's fanfiction!

But yeah, you're probably right. I /think/ you could make it work with Dean and Cas or something though. Bonus points if it's Sam who dies instead of Dean. Then I think Dean would definitely go for it.

Some people are really into the idea that the men they're writing as having sex with other men are "straight," whatever that means in the context of men who have sex with other men. There was a writer a while back who wrote a gay romance called Danny, but got indignant when anyone called it gay, because the guys sucking each other's cocks were straight, damn it!

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
It's a loooooongstanding fetish within the gay community, so I shouldn't be surprised it shows up in slash.

I guess I'm just not used to seeing anything resembling actual gay men in slash.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
No, you see, they are the "good" shippers who don't confuse fanon with canon. So they KNOW Dean is straight and totally macho no homo, unlike those yucky Destiel shippers who are totally lying about being bisexual or non-straight and obviously just want Dean to be bisexual because they fetichise gay men. (not bisexual men, because, after all, bisexuals don't exist. IT's just that how dare they think Dean is bisexual, if he obviously loves women!)

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Lol this whole comment just reads as soooooooooo salty. I think I even agree with your underlying point, but I can't get over the ocean of salt.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Well, excuse me for being salty that TV in general dislikes to use the word "Bisexual".

Or for being tired that apparently now there's a "Good" way to ship fictional characters after years and years of "ship and let ship"

Back when I was a young slasher (about the time Pteranadon was taking to the skies) the accepted slash trope was We're Not Gay, We Just Love Each Other.

Over time, people started to think that maybe it was okay if the occasional slash character was maybe a little bit bisexual. Like, they hadn't actually touched another dude in a sexual way, but maybe they'd been at least theoretically attracted to at least some guys?

Now, it's not unusual to find slash pairings where one or both of the guys have had at least a little bit of prior experience with dudes.

But WNGWJLEO has never completely gone away, especially in some older-school fandoms. And for whatever reason, the Wincest part of Supernatural fandom has glommed hard onto the trope.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, I have operated under "we're not gay" trope for the longest while and it seemed like a default option to make at least one character perfectly straight but being gay for this particular other character - oftenly with all the inner conflict and drama that could arise from it. Sounds pretty stupid when I think about it now, but I had to go through several fandoms that didn't have that trope to get rid of it.

It was the default for slash fandom for a long time. I am bi, and I wrote WNGWJLEO because that's just how slash WAS back in the day. I didn't think to question it until I heard other queer slashers saying "you know, this whole insistence that all of these characters are straight sounds pretty damn skeevy to those of us who aren't."

Yeah - it is good that you see bisexuality mentioned more now but that brings with it the prejudice from people who are still committed to WNNGWJLEO. Fandom tropes are hard to change.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
It's Superatural. There are demons and vampires and angels and ghosts. Surely our suspension of disbelief can extend to two 100% heterosexual manly straight men who just happen to like having sex with each other.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-18 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
What the fuck does this even mean.

OP doesn't like how Destiel fans use the ship as some sort of representation for bisexuality when it's not even canon. But on the other hand she dislikes how the rival ship in fandom is aggressively anti- the very idea of bisexuality.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-20 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Pro-gay-incest but anti-bi? Love is good unless you mix it up?

I will never understand the way brains work.

Parts of the SPN fandom back when I chilled there were so rabid about what Dean/anyone was or wasn't, and what was or wasn't Representation versus Queer-baiting, and it got exhausting. I suggest you not worry and find new fandom space. And a character who is never explicitly bisexual in behavior or name is not representation, so I agree with you that calling Dean bisexual representation is annoying.

Supernatural fandom is terrifying. I love the show and would love to get into fandom, but it's like HP fandom. The fandom fans make me so uncomfortable.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
My friend put it succinctly: the problem with Supernatural fandom is that it's full of Supernatural fans.

I suggest just reading fanfiction. There are tons upon tons of fanfics, and you don't have to interact with anyone.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
It was always my headcanon that Sam was bi, all that new found freedom when he went to college...
