Ah, young people. "Brown as a nut" usually means that a person has a tan and not that they're a person of color.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah. I assume that is him deducting Watson was a soldier in some place with a lot of sun.

You know that and I know that, but Tumblr kids don't know that. I suspect they'd fall for it.

+1

The description comes from the line of a character who met Watson again for the first time after he returned to England.

"Whatever have you been doing with yourself, Watson?" he asked in undisguised wonder, as we rattled through the crowded London streets. "You are as thin as a lath and as brown as a nut."

Implying that he had NOT been "thin as a lath and brown as a nut" lest time they had met, meaning before Watson served in Afghanistan. So yeah, this is definitely about Watson having tanned. Surprisingly enough, white people tan. Even Brits.

Careful now - to some parts of the tumblr SJW crowd, tanning is cultural appropriation.

I have literally seen people in all seriousness claim "brownface" in regards to a white person exhibiting a very legitimate tan.

There's SJ, and then there's just letting your brain fall right out of your skull.

See also: Tumblr freaking out over Chris Pratt "being in brownface" for the last Jurassic Park film. These people have been posting from their moms' basements for so long, they have literally forgotten what a tan is.

Exactly what I can here to say.

Try telling that to all the people who leaped on "Hermione was described as being brown after a holiday. OMG SHE'S A POC!!!!!!!!!! HDU NOT THINK SHE'S A POC THAT'S RACIST"

(Anonymous) 2016-04-20 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
But she's CLEARLY a POC, no white person could ever have unruly brown hair! (Like, I get it when people want to headcanon her as a POC but it would be great if they didn't fall back on what's basically racial stereotypes to try and prove their legitimisation.)
