So I recently discovered a side to tumblr that I was unaware of before yesterday. So I knew about the pro-ana/mia and pro-cutting, etc. sides of tumblr, but apparently there is a new thing called "meanspo" when mentally ill tumblr users will ask their "ana/mia buddy" to send them hateful messages that will convince them not to eat or just say mean things to them in general to help them suffer for "feeling too good" or "wavering on how they feel about ana/mia." I am just horrified. Is there a way to report a whole tag to tumblr? Because reporting every blog would take forever. :(

I know when I had an eating disorder, it totally worked when people tried to save my life! I definitely didn't resent them at all for it.

I'm not here because someone on the internet tried to save me. I'm here because I made a personal choice that I wasn't going to let ED kill me.

No one can make that choice for anyone else. ED is about control as much as it's about food or body image. When you try to nursemaid people or strip them of their autonomy, it only makes them more determined to self-destruct.

You're not helping. You're not a doctor, you're not a psychiatrist, you are in no way the help that they need. You're some random person on the internet that literally no one is going to listen to. All you're going to do is make them feel worse.

But feeling worse is the whole point of the tag, so either way, I can't really fuck it up, can I?

It might not make them *feel* worse. But it will absolutely reinforce their behavior.

Yeah, I get it. Everyone on the internet must be babysitted and reported and controlled 24/7 for their own good.

I know you're trolling, but I'm bored, so...

I'm only reporting the tag because seeing shit like that in the tags can have have such a detrimental affect on a person. I've been there and done that, and I'm glad they allow you to report stuff like that now.

I'm not trolling. I'm fiercely opposed to people controlling other people. Partly because it only pisses them off and makes the behavior worse. So you report the tag and get it shut down. You think that's going to stop them? Are you inferring that certain tags shouldn't be allowed on tumblr? Who gets to decide that? What other tags are not allowed? Do you really see no problem with trying to stop and silence things that you believe are wrong at the expense of others' freedoms? If you're concerned, don't you think it might be better to send asks to these accounts offering your help and support, rather than reporting them like misbehaving children? Or perhaps start your own ED education tumblr?

I don't think so. IIRC, you have to go through and report blogs/entries individually.

Self-harm tags are in a category of their own though, with a popup warning for you before you can view them. You could try suggesting /meanspo as a tag to be put into that category.

That's what I ended up doing.

Ngl, there's a part of me that does kind of get turned on by the idea of having people send me degrading messages but, yeah, using it as a way to encourage your eating disorder is just...really, sad. I just looked through the tag for less than a minute and I'm really bummed out

Knowing about this just makes me so upset that people with eating disorders feel like they don't deserve to be happy or anything positive because of all the self hatred (and even though I don't have an eating disorder, I know how horrible self-hatred is).

Yeah

I'm the same. And I've known people whose depression tells them that they don't deserve to be happy or even be alive. The fact that I understand that feeling makes it that much harder to see people who feel like that.

These people need help and need people it to gently drill it into them that they're okay and deserve happiness as much as anyone else.
