Oh shit I'd forgot about this. Fatshaming. Shit. I guess there really are no old white men who aren't shitty.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-21 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Fat chick here, and I thought it was hilarious. Y'all need to chill.

[personal profile] lady_dragoon 2016-04-21 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
As a fat woman, few things make me laugh harder than a well-executed fat joke. Sir Patrick Stewart knows how to pull that off.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-21 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
As a fat woman, I *wasn't* amused and did not find it funny nor tasteful, but he felt bad and that was that. It didn't make me think less of him.

I'm just really tired of fat humor being 1. the go to joke 2. never being considered inappropriate because we fatties do it to ourselves and how dare we ever show ourselves in public when we should just stay in the house and die alone

[personal profile] lady_dragoon 2016-04-21 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Or, you know, we fatties can learn to laugh at ourselves once in a while and not be so srs bizns 24/7.

Thin people erasure! RAAAAGE!

(Anonymous) 2016-04-21 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)

it can be the case that society is systemically shitty to fat people in a way that is less severe than the situation of black people

So, there you go, Patrick. One joke makes you shitty. Guess you wasted your time with all the excellent anti domestic violence advocacy. Don't think your work in support of veterans with PTSD will do you any good either. Or the pleasure you've brought people with your acting. Shoulda never told that one joke, shitty, shitty Patrick. Especially whilst also committing the deliberate offenses of being old, white and male, you criminal. P-Stew, you're the worst. Some random perfect person on the internet said so, so learn your lesson, old man.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-22 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
lol butthurt patrick stewart fan.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-22 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I've barely seen his acting work, actually. I admire his charity and advocacy work. I think he has more to offer to the world than someone who brands entire groups of human beings as "shitty" based on shared characteristics of age, gender and ethnicity. And because of a what - one joke?

I don;t have to be a butthurt fan to challenge the internet's terminally offended self-appointed language/attitude/humour police to look at their own behaviour before having a pop at anyone else's. For people who are so keen on monitoring other people's speech, they are super-keen on describing anyone who doesn't live up to their arbitrary standards - or who belongs to a group they have deemed to be collectively oppressive - as "shitty" and "trash". The whole "your horrible language is oppressive, my horrible language is justice" routine - teeny, tiny bit of a double-standard there no?

To be clear, the incident does not reflect well on Patrick Stewart and the background has never been explained but he did offer an apology for his behaviour that was accepted and it's widely accepted that the incident was out of character. Is shitty a fair assessment, when set against how he usually conducts himself? I don't think so. Are his age, ethnicity and gender at all relevant to what he did that night - no.

Is it fair to denigrate all old, white men based on the behaviour of some of that group - emphatically no.

Calm down anon, no one said "OMG PATRICK IS SCUM!!11111!!!" Someone thinking, "Hey, this person might not be as perfect as I thought" is not the same as thinking they're a useless lump who isn't worth anything.

Though I agree with the other anon that it's hard to judge without knowing the entire situation, which it doesn't appear that anyone really does...

Oh, give it five minutes. Some little drone will have some half-baked dirt on him

(Anonymous) 2016-04-22 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
a panda is suing him for sexual harrassment.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-22 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
So what DID happen here? Stewart is generally a decent/kind/merry person, so I have to assume Corden went at someone/something too far and Stewart felt compelled to call him on his bullshit, but fell sideways. But I didn't see the whole show.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-22 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea what the story behind it is, either...

(Anonymous) 2016-04-22 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
I have *heard* - I haven't watched a video of the event, so I'm going entirely off hearsay here - that Corden made a gay joke about Stewart, and Stewart responded (or said later? I get the impression that Corden's comments happened when Stewart was not on stage) by criticizing Corden's professionalism and, in the next breath, his weight. Corden jabbed back, and made some jokes later in the event about Stewart's age.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-22 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Hah, James Corden isn't getting anything worse than he's dished out himself plenty of times

It was very odd and seemed out of character from how he otherwise behaves in public. Maybe he was having a bad day??
