Finding out something nasty about someone you like a lot

[personal profile] sparrow_lately 2016-04-21 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Always sucks. Doubly so when it's a student. I've learned. :/

I'm sorry to hear it :(

Yeah, I'm a pretty open-minded person, but some things just change the way you look at someone.

Likewise, especially when the participants are 14 years old. But nasty is nasty, and stealing a classmate's naked pictures off her phone and sending them around is P Nasty. Especially as this boy always seemed pretty lovely/upstanding.

Obviously, he's 14. But still.

Yiiiiikes. Nasty AND stupid, a real winning combo. If the girl is underage won't there be a problem?

Distribution of child porn in many jurisdictions. Life on a sex offender register. Yeah. World of trouble.

Not sure how naked or not the pictures were--this happened before I got to the school. I don't know what happened, but from my memories of similar experiences when I was in high school, there's a good chance it was settled between the families and the school without the law getting involved.

So you heard something nasty about someone, but you don't know how nasty?

You framed this as a boy stealing someone's naked pics off their phone. But then you say they might or might not have actually been naked pics. Because you weren't there. And it happened a while ago. So basically you're engaging in gossip about a 14 year old student.

Oh calm down. I don't know if she was naked or just close to it, because the person who told me only used the word "intimate."

According to the law in many places, she'll be charged as well for taking them.

Maybe instead of being like Tumblr and damning a person forever for something awful they did when they were 14, you could try and do something to get him to stop that shit and become a better person.

I'm not remotely damning him forever. Like I said, I like him a lot. He's only 14, and he's very bright. Still, this is something he did recently and absolutely should NOT have--there's no excuse. It hurts my opinion of him a lot, and it's weird and sad to know someone so young and sweet could do that.

Yeah :/ I feel so weirdly sad about it, because he's one of my favorites.

It's so hard because he's 14. Like it's that fine line of being too much of a kid to understand certain things, but, sort of having to know better, too.

I was a terrible human being at 14.

He probably does not grasp the full impact, but it's still shitty, and some things are sadly irreversible, even when you're young and stupid.

Re: Finding out something nasty about someone you like a lot

[personal profile] sparrow_lately 2016-04-22 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. Plus, he's *still* 14, so the whole "he was young and stupid" thing doesn't totally fly because...he's still that guy? It's not like it's been 10 years.

Edit: I was a terrible person at 14, too, but I think I would have known reasons why taking naked pictures off someone's phone and sending them around would be extremely not okay. And I was astonishingly sexually naive at that age, tbh.

True, but in 10 years time he MIGHT still look back and cringe at the person he was...if certain things go right.

i know you might not feel like it, but if you're his teacher, could you maybe have a conversation with him about why he did it?

Oh yeah, he's by no means a lost cause. But it's just upsetting to learn.

For a lot of reasons I'm not the person to have a conversation with him about it--not least because it happened a long time ago (relatively speaking--last semester). Still, I suppose this is good practice for when nice kids do nasty shit.

Right - well fair enough. You can still be powerful influence, though, don't underestimate that.

Worse if it's a teacher. Trust me - twice in the last eight years, I've heard of teachers from my old high school being terrible people vis-à-vis underage female students.

Yeah it's bad enough when it's a celeb but if it's someone you know personally that basically kicks your heart in the ass. :/

Like when a classmate I used to respect turned into a raging neocon.
