Ahh I feel you so much on the desire for a more faithful adaptation. Sad to hear this one makes nods to the source material that never pay off, I saw some familiar bits in the commercials (buffaloes!) and had hopes. I know there's another live action adaptation in the works by a British studio slated for 2018 that I had hopes for (apparently Tabaqui is in it) but there's at least one original character in there so my hopes have scaled back.

Honestly I'd just like to see an adaptation that *doesn't* involve Shere Khan. He's in like three of the stories (and no one ever adapts How Fear Came so it's really only two), there are more than that! I'd love to see an adaptation that covers the letting in of the jungle or the red dogs.

There's no Tabaqui in this latest one?

If you don't mind it being animated and him looking like Wile E. Coyote, then Chuck Jones' Mowgli's Brothers might appeal to you.

Erhhh....um. I shall have to see. That doesn't sound terribly appealing.

It's worth it! Mowgli threatens Sher Khan towards the end and it is epic

I believe it stays pretty true to the book :)

Ah ha ha. In the stories, Mowgli kills Shere Kahn and skins him, with the help of his wolf brothers. But that's probably a bit much for a kid's movie.

probably

Although, I will confess that I never actually read the Mowgli chapters - I've read The White Seal and Rikki Tikki Tavi [both of which received a very well done adaptation by Chuck Jones]

Oh, I remember seeing that ages ago. And that Rikki Tikki Tavi is awesome! Thanks for the link! You should read the stories, though - they're so fun, and a lot more detail and depth.

welcome :D [and if I really wanted to date myself, I have a copy of Mowgli's Brothers on VHS]

Rikki Tikki Tavi was one of my favorites.

I'll have to see if I can locate that book then :D Thanks for the rec!
