Board Game Fans: Need help finding some games

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2016-04-24 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I am looking for different games to play with different groups of players.

1) I am looking for board games to play with just two people that have high replay ability. This will be for two people who've not played a lot of games other than traditional ones (scrabble, monopoly, etc). Competitive or Coop. Card games are fine. Playtime: No limit

2) Games for 2-4 people that will be playing around a toddler. So preferably games without a lot of pieces that will be ruined if a small child bumps the board or something. Playtime: max 45 minutes

3) Games for movie buffs that have a high replay value (so no trivia games). A podcast I listen to has talked about Double Feature (http://amzn.com/B00LD173IW )a lot. So I might get that (seems like it can be replayed a lot and can work with all levels of movie fans) but does anyone know better options? Playtime: max 45 minutes

Bonuses: Great artwork. Combining the above options. Around $30 price range (or less). No specific genre, though no one in any of these groups are huge fans of fantasy.

2) I think Taboo is a good one. All it is is cards, and the order of cards doesn't matter. And the rounds are only a minute long, so you won't need to worry about putting in a ton of effort or time, but it feels "high stakes," so it's still a lot of fun!

Stratego is an all-time classic for group one. The rules are fairly easy to understand (and leave themselves open to slight alterations -- my dad and I had our own rules about how the Spy worked) and the game is quick to play.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've heard of that but I'll need to watch some videos on it.

It's pretty much checkers with more strategy involved, I suppose. There's also a 4-player variety.

Well if you like chess even a little bit, you should look into a game called 'Knightmare chess' (any edition works fine). You play it ontop of a normal chess board but you get cards that you can play to change up the game. Like, knights now move in 4x2 chunks or a particular piece can move through your other pieces this turn. Super super fun, strategic but still chaotic, high replayability. 10/10 would recommend.

For your second category, Sushi Go! sounds ideal, just pass-n-play cards in a neat travel tin. Or Love Letter. Sheriff of Nottingham is another good one that doesn't have a ton of fiddly bits, although there is game money (coins).

Is your group familiar with Balderdash? It's a bluffing game about making up definitions for uncommon words. Just the card deck of real definitions + slips of paper with the fake answers. It comes with a mini board for keeping score, but if that's in the way, you can easily just write down the points (scrabble style).

Love Letter is one I've been considering. If nothing else, it is fairly cheap.

I've not heard of Balderdash. I am going to look it up today. :D

1) Sequence is awesome(https://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/2375/sequence). Upwords is Scrabbl-ish (https://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/1515/upwords). I really like Dominoes, though I wouldn't exactly consider it a board game.

2) If you like charades, there is Charoodles (https://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/19531/charoodles). Electronic Catch Phrase is a lot of fun and doesn't actually have a board (https://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/135262/electronic-catch-phrase).

3) Timeline Music & Cinema might work (https://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/145189/timeline-music-cinema).

Oh! Upwords looks like a perfect game. We love Scrabble.

Timeline looks like it could be fun if you get 1-2 expansions. But I will have to see how interested they are in it.

For both 1 and 2, you can try Fluxx - it's super fun (though more with the 2-4 bracket, I think), and just cards, and doesn't have to be particularly long, though length varies. Best Fluxx is Star Fluxx, imo (it's the sci-fi edition, and has lots of super fun cards).

I don't know if this would be a bit much for people who haven't played much, but I think Eldritch Horror is a really great game. It's pretty involved, and takes some time to figure out on the first playthroughs, and every session can take up to 6 hours (depending on how many people play). You can play with 2, but also up to 8, and it's great either way. Though this is a bit above your price range.

Also for 2, maybe try Once Upon A Time. it's a storytelling game, so everybody's actually telling a story together, using cards. It's pretty cool, and can be lots of fun with the right group. It might run longer than 45 minutes, though.

I was looking at Eldritch Horror! I think it might be great to play with my sister.

Once Upon a Time looks like it might be fun (I watched a video of it). Not sure how imaginative other people in my group are.

I seriously adore Eldritch Horror. It's SO satisfying to beat.

I've played Once Upon a Time with people who aren't necessarily "storyteller" types, and it's worked okay. Because you have the cards for prompts. If anything, sometimes if everybody's a storyteller the game can get way long and involved XD
But yeah, it's hard to know how it'll work with a specific group until you've tried.

Oh, another game which is pretty light and fun is Dixit.

For card games, there's also the card version of Monopoly which is superior to regular Monopoly in every way (i.e., actually fun).
