I don't mind fancasts but sometimes it's really embarrassingly obvious that while people want to cast diversely, they only know a handful of POC actors. So I love Idris Elba, but he's everywhere. Ditto Lucy Liu.

But I really do like Idris Elba and Lucy Liu. They're both versatile and I can see them in many different roles and genres.

Just like with fanmixes, fancasts use what people know. And most people know what everyone else knows.

Fan casts are only fun when they're original and thought out--and for the love of GOD stop putting Idris Elba in everything. I love him too, but calm down, everyone.

That said, almost nothing is dearer to my heart than my Rami Malek as Tony Stark mental fan-cast....and yes, I realize Rami Malek is right there on your secret, OP. :P

TBF this has been going on for a long time now. Like, Idris Elba has been in everyone's fan casts going back to, like, when he was on The Wire, hasn't he?

I can agree with that tbh. Like you can't say 'we need variety and diversity' and pick the same five people of color.

but to be fair most of my fancasts have the same person in like three stories so.

To be honest, I can't stand fancasts either for exactly this reason. Back in the day, they ended up being 70 to 80 percent LOTR actors and I was just like OBGAJKFJKDLAHGJKASDF;KL

I almost hate voice actor fancasts as much.

My guess is the magazine you were reading was Anime Insider; they had something similar. I remember the Slayers fancast specifically because it had Amélie from Amélie as... Amelia (how. clever.) and Ron Perlman as Zelgadis, which, okay, I'd watch it. It'd be hilariously awful, but I'd watch it.

The Idris Elba one bugs me specifically, because I saw him cast as Sam Vimes of all people, and it was just like... No... Maybe it's just the movies I've seen him in (which I'm totally willing to admit), but he just seems too posh/polished to be Vimes.

They do tend to be pretty samey, I think for the most part that people don't actually know that many actors(I know I don't) so they stick with who they like and know, so the lists are very often the same as a result.

I don't disagree, but at the same time, if Benedict Cumberbatch can be in every single movie, why not Idris Elba? Plenty of actors have had years where they are overexposed.

Except every once in a while a fancast will totally hit my buttons and I'll love it? So I get the appeal i just wish I didn't because ugh.

I always make it a game.

Something like, cast it with only actors who are in current TV medical dramas. Or only use actors who have played a US president. Or only use stand-up comedians who can act (I feel like this one is one that studios actually use).

But my favorite game of fancasting is for a reboot or a remake (even one I’m iffy on), to find out the age of the original actors in the year the original movie came out and use Imdb to find actors within about a year of those ages now. Like if they were to remake Chitty Bang Bang (1968):
Caractacus Potts (Dick Van Dyke at 43) might be Kevin McKidd or Jack Davenport (though, I’m not sure how well he can sing) or Mos Def
Truly Scrumptious (Sally Ann Howes at 38) could be Rose Byrne or Rosario Dawson or Lucy Punch
Grandpa Potts (Lionel Jeffries at 42) could be Jemaine Clement or Dule Hill
Baron Bomburst (Gert Frobe at 55) might be Robert Carlyle or Hugo Weaving or BD Wong
Baroness Bomburst (Anna Quayle at 36) could be Rebel Wilson or Sheridan Smith or Kate Micucci

I like Lucy Liu but the rest of those actors are ones I'm sick of looking at or completely neutral towards.
