Well, the idiots in this (old) news story thinking investing money in improving bike lanes is ageist, sexist, and racist.

I mean there are definitely contexts in which that's true

DA

I am struggling to think of ANY sort of context where that would be true...

Well, the racist part mostly, or classist especially. If you have a context where the proposed bike lanes would largely be used by more well off white people, whether for recreation or commuting from wealthier areas. And you're choosing to prioritize that.

It's the city center. So likely used by people going to and from work. Or tourists.

Many large cities have bikes you can rent and ride around.

I said I could think of contexts in which it was racist. Not that it was definitely racist in this context. My point was just that it isn't prima facie absurd.

Ok ageist I get and maybe racist if "race" is code for "wealth/social class" which is agonizingly offensive in and of itself, but sexist? Wut?

women of any ethnic group who wish to wear modest clothing, and I count myself in that category, are not going to cycle

You realize you can cycle in a skirt, eh. With, like, a parka on if you want to. I've seen women ride bikes in fucking hijab.

...Oh, you're old and completely out of shape. Nevermind. Cool excuse, sis.

"women of any ethnic group who wish to wear modest clothing, and I count myself in that category, are not going to cycle. It is a discriminatory form of transport".

You don't need to wear tight bike shorts to ride a bike FFS. Victorian era women used to ride bikes in long skirts and corsets. Nuns can ride bikes in habits. I see people in jeans riding bikes around my neighborhood all the time. Globally, women ride bikes in all kinds of outfits.

Also, it's true there are elderly or disabled people who aren't going to benefit from bike lanes (although there are different types of bikes to accommodate some disabilities) but the thing about a diverse population is you can't possibly benefit everyone equally all the time because everyone has different needs. If spending public money on a bike lane is ageist, then arguably so is spending money on elder care or youth programs or anything that does not equally serve every age group from cradle to grave all at once.

That is the silliest thing I've ever read. Women's bicycles are designed so that one can even wear a long skirt to ride!
