He and Hugo Weaving were both way too obviously aged to be elves. I thought they were supposed to appear young, at least to everyone who was not also an elf? And I never got the impression that elves were supposed to be overweight. This guy (sorry, I don't remember the actor's name) and Orlando Bloom were both too fat.

Actually I think a lot of elves are described as just looking "ageless" - as in, you can't tell what age they are. Some elves are specified as looking young, but mostly I think they're just not supposed to show clear signs of aging like wrinkles and grey hair.

Though if I'm remembering the specifics carefully, there's a character in the Silmarillion, Gwindor, who was captured and enslaved by Morgoth and his suffering aged him physically, or at least destroyed his beauty.

See, I can totally imagine some elves who went through a lot aging just from that. Because stress can totally cause skin to wrinkle and bags under the eyes to form. So I always thought that, say, Elrond might look older because of all he went through.

...Orlando Bloom was too fat?

Right? They're not supposed to be stick insects....

nayrt.

He was very obviously thicker and older (and the "deaging" cgi/make up dragged him into uncanny territory) in The Hobbit than he was in LOTR. Not fat, but clearly not the slender youth he'd been in the original trilogy.

oh maybe, I try not to think about The Hobbit films, but he was very slender, youthful and pretty in the original trilogy.
