I really don't know what to politely call intellectually disabled people such that other folks understand what I'm talking about. If I say "intellectually disabled," they have no idea what I mean unless I clarify to "retarded," which is considered offensive now.

someone with a developmental disability?

Mentally challenged. Maybe slow. But I question the offensiveness of retarded. Retard sure, or using retarded in inappropriate ways, but for a person who just retarded...I'm not so sure.

People don't know what "intellectually disabled" refers to? It seems pretty self-explanatory to me. What do people think of instead of what we're talking about here?

They typically think I mean learning disabilities like dyslexia.

I just use slow. It's not PC, but it doesn't sting like retard, and it's applicable to a broader range of people. Like, I don't have any really significant impairments, but in some situations I definitely qualify as slow.

I use "cognitively impaired" (in a clinical context).

Referring to someone as "a retard" is generally not called for, but calling someone who has a cognitive disability that has been diagnosed as retardation "retarded" is... correct terminology.

People take it too god damn far sometimes, and get all bent out of shape about it, but that's still the medical term. It's along the same lines as someone getting mad because you said penis or vagina; yeah, it happens, but the person getting mad is probably in the wrong unless you specifically used it to be derogatory.

I thought handicapped was offensive now.

No. I mean, not at large.

I think more outdated than offensive. I don't know anyone who would be offended by it (I'm sure there are people who are though because there's all different kinds of people in the world), just kind of surprised at hearing it.

I actually read a good takedown of the idea of the offensive origins of handicapped. Uh, lemme see if I can find it again...

Well, I didn't find it, but I found one even better! And these days, I'm actually okay with the idea of being handicapped. I mean, I AM operating in the world with a handicap that shortens my abilities. I think that trying to pretend I'm not impaired, or talking down about them is kinda well-intentioned, but not helpful.

So I personally am okay with it, but it's definitely a minefield.

Also, I remember you mentioning writing a magically multi character a while back. Did that ever get off the ground?

I've barely written anything this year, to be honest. My productivity went down the drain ever since I graduated college and had to leave my writing group, and I've been doing even less since my work schedule got so erratic.

it's certainly a step up from "retarded" ffs

My sister has Downs Syndrome, and is definitely hurt when people say this word (including sometimes my mom!). We usually say handicapped, or special. She finds undue emphasis on her differences painful. It's hard enough for her when she misses things, etc. But yes, words like retarded do hurt....

Re: -ists, phobias and slurs

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I tend to say special if people don't understand what I mean by intellectually disabled or delayed. Sometimes I say severely or moderately disabled so people can kinda imagine what I'm talking about. I work with special needs kids and the word retarded does hurt their feelings, so I can't bring myself to say it even if the kids aren't around.

I've heard "LD" I think, for "learning disabled," but that was almost 20 years ago and may be deprecated by now.

I am also used to "LD" standing for "land destruction" and "Lincoln-Douglas," making it a perfectly ambiguous, context-dependent abbreviation, and thus just as annoying as abbreviations are supposed to be.
