Re: Peeves about nerds, geeks, and our own ilk

Trying to judge who's a "real" geek and who's "faking", as though there's some sort of checklist one has to go through to prove their cred.

Re: Peeves about nerds, geeks, and our own ilk

(Anonymous) 2016-05-01 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Ughh, yes. And I'll add to that having to prove who's been a fan longer, before all the plebes embraced whatever nerdy thing they love.

Re: Peeves about nerds, geeks, and our own ilk

(Anonymous) 2016-05-01 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
YES. Because it's not like your age or where you live or other issues like that might play a factor in when you learn about and get into the nerdy thing in question, right?

(It also amuses me how people will grumble on and on about why x thing is so popular when y thing is so much better, and then when the thing they love DOES happen to start getting some attention and popularity...those fans then get annoyed that it's getting popular and gaining fans. Isn't that precisely what you guys said you wanted?)

Yeah, absolutely this.

I hate this. I hate people who have a "You must have liked this for [x] amount of time to be a real fan."

On the other side of it sucks when you've got your metaphorical phd and the people you're talking to are just starting their first 101 course.

Does it suck though? I mean, I could see if it was the type of person who storms into a fandom after watching one episode (for example) and says, "I AM THE KNOWER OF ALL, DON'T ARGUE WITH ME!" but everyone is 'new' to fandom at one point, and if they're willing to engage politely, is that terrible?

Yes, because they might get being a fan WRONG. >:( And then that's the end of society as we know it!

Yup, there is no 'test' to determine a true fan or whatever. You like something and want to call yourself a fan of it? Congrats you're a fan, welcome to the group.

Re: Peeves about nerds, geeks, and our own ilk

(Anonymous) 2016-05-01 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I'm just happy to meet/talk to anyone who likes the same things I do, period.

And if they happen to only know a handful of songs, or have only seen a select few episodes of a show, or whatever, if they want to delve further into the fandom from there, I'll be happy to recommend and share where necessary. After all, how exactly are they supposed to learn more if the fans who've been there for a while get all stingy with who's allowed into the fandom?

Clearly we are supposed to mock and deride them so that instead of liking said geeky thing they'll avoid it forever, because that's always the best option!

But nah, I may get a little excitable when I meet someone who likes the same nerd stuff as me(especially if it's obscure) but if they don't know much then I'll just explain things or tell them to check x-thing out, because I want to be able to keep talking to them about it man.

I know the difference! the fake geeks pass on "cool" stuff, the real geeks aggressively wank about everything.

or, that's what the people complaining about fake geeks gals do...

hmmm

If you bathe, you're not a real geek. That should settle it.
