Not knowing what is and isn't appropriate in a Q&A setting.

Oh Lord, this.

I pretty much bail at Q&A sessions at cons nowadays. If it's not nerds asking questions that send powerlevels through the roof, it's the people who drop copious amounts of spaghetti. (Kids who go up to ask questions don't count, obviously)

I don't blame you at all.

I haven't done many cons, just a bunch of film festivals and honestly, it was either the same BS questions about film making that you could easily look up online or just blatantly praising the director/actor.

Kids can be cute, but I've also seen some where the child shouldn't be there (hello Nerdist podcast live!)

Oh yeah, getting the same questions all the time at every single film festival would be grating after a while.

I found that kids can ask some of the more interesting questions. Like, I was sitting through a Phineas and Ferb panel at SDCC and this little girl came up and asked the showrunners point blank why there weren't any "girl superheroes" in the P&F/Marvel crossover special (that got a massive 'Oooooooh!' from the crowd) and judging by their reaction, I don't think they were prepared to get that right out of the gate, lmao.

I'd rather have more moments like that, than some mouthbreather going up and setting off the cringe meter.

See but a kid there would be appropriate. I was at the 10:30 Nerdist podcast at SDCC and no one under the age of 14/15 should have been there, but there was a kid who was maybe 8 or 9 that went up for the Q&A.

Sometimes you get really introspective questions at the film festival Q&As, like I didn't know just how passionate Richard Dreyfuss was about civics and government and how he really thinks more needs to be taught at the lower levels of school.

Again Nerdist podcast where the people just go up to praise how much the podcast saved their lives. I don't know, it just feels really awkward to say this to an entire room.

I was helping out at a local con and we had a female writer come for a Q&A (and can probably already guess where this is going) which all started off relevant enough except we had this one guy whose arm went up at every question opportunity and he was doing the fourth grade dancing in his seat the way his arm was up by a few rounds. Finally he gets picked, and he asked if any of the characters in her books sex life was based on her own.

Creepy, but not yet the creepiest part. After being thrown out the room, immediately, while us adults remained for the Q&A, he started lurking around. First around the room where the Q&A was being held, then after being asked to leave the entire premises (to be clear he was only thrown out the room, at first, and banned from the Q&As but was free to go spend his cash in the dealer room) where he was seen lurking around the edges of parking lot. Which is still creepy, but maybe he was waiting on his ride or something-you'd hope-, but he took it to another level when it was noticed that every time a car approached the exit he was moving up close to them when they got to the barrier and trying to see who was inside. That was the point where the cops were called and after speaking to them he left.

Well, left to go do the same damn thing at the base of the drive 200 yards away where the con center traffic had to join the streets. Cops were called again, and apparently he then got into an altercation with them because he was adamant that he was technically following the "Leave here now" command, so therefor was free to do what he wanted and that included peering right down into folks cars and approaching them while stopped. Last seen in the back of a squad car heading downtown, and god help me but I actually felt sorry for the cops having to deal with him. You gotta wonder though, why did he think any of his long string of bad decisions that day were appropriate?

This is the most extreme case of inappropriate con behavior I've seen, but it is far from unique. It is just constant creepiness, and constant attempts to excuse it by citing very technical definitions, and sadly there is not always supportive con security or supportive cops around to help.

...yeow. That's...unsettling. To say the very least. Thank goodness they were finally able to get him out of there eventually.

Oh, wow. In a case like that, I'd say that his obsession has gotten to levels where he simply doesn't know what's normal and what isn't anymore. (Assuming he ever knew it in the first place.) He just lacks the perspective to see how weird and stalkery his behavior is because he's already spent so much time rationalizing it away bit by bit that he's legitimately upset because in his head, he's not the problem, everyone else is!

At Tribeca Film Festival this year, someone asked Ilana Glazer to join in on a threesome with her and her boyfriend.

I think the problem is that as fandom becomes more mainstream people lose touch with what is and isn't appropriate behavior.

I loved Tom Felton's documentary about fans and fandom in general. It was on BBC3 a year or two ago. Obviously it dealt mostly with Harry Potter, but it was nice insight to fans and how the stars react to it because he interviewed Rupert, Daniel and JK.

I havn't heard of that doc - what is it? (Not like it will be legal to watch in the States but)

Actually I think it aired on some channel in the States.

I ended up finding it and downloaded it because I really wanted to watch it.

It's called "Tom Felton Meets The Superfans" and he directed it. I know it was on the BBC's website for the longest time, but I'm sure you can dig it up somewhere.

I know if I were some kind of creator doing a Q&A about my media, I'd be so creeped out and possibly even a little shaken up by something like that - and I like to think of myself as someone who's not easily cowed.

Yep, that's one. There are some damn cringe worthy questions asked at Q&A's.

Oh man I rarely watch Q&A anymore because there will always be that one person who radiates supernova level social awkwardness asking cringeworthy stuff and I feel so embarrassed for everyone, including them.

Oh, man. I remember at some SDCC panel I was sitting through while waiting for something else, and someone asked an actress the prototypical "will you star in my movie? I wrote the screenplay for you" question, which is one they explicitly tell people not to ask. The guy got roundly booed by several hundred people. I thought that was as bad as it could get until the year I sat through the first Twilight movie panel. Eesh. "What kind of underwear do you wear?" "What's it like being the sexiest man in the world?" "Do you like older women?" I have never wanted to sink through the floor more in my life. I didn't used to give any fucks one way or another about Twilight except being surprised they were so popular after reading the first three, because I work at a library and try to read the really popular stuff so I can give my opinion if asked. They were harmless teen beach reads, until I met the fandom.

There are some things that are better left unsaid.

Oh fandom! Harry Potter has a much darker side when you look too.
