Just because you own something doesn't mean you have to be in the "community". Unless there is some kind of mandatory registration involved when buying one??

I came here to say? I'm assuming it's for using it as a model thingy? You don't need to showcase it.

I was thinking this at first, though maybe OP is afraid if they post their photography pics with the dolls in them that the community will start reblogging them and they may not be able to avoid contact? idk

OP

Bingo.

Eh. If you're not in the community to begin with, it would be pretty hard for them to 'find' you unless you tagged/talked about them being those specific dolls. And if they *did* reblog, well - you don't have to look, or follow, or respond.

My friend is in the BJD community and from what she tells me, your impression is pretty much right... You just have to do your best to avoid/ignore those types and find a group of saner friends (they do exist, but they're obviously a lot more low-key.)

(Anonymous) 2016-05-09 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
So buy your doll and enjoy it. Don't interact with people who bring drama.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-09 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously, this. Just because you buy a Thing and use it in your art doesn't mean you have to engage with other people who own the Thing.

OP, there is a sane doll community out there!

Go sign up for DolliehSanctuary. It's a really low-key, slow-ish board with a bunch of sweet, non judgemental people on there who just like to show off their dolls, photography work with dolls in them, etc. Plus it's a great board that doesn't have that same weird "RESIN IS OBJECTIVELY SUPERIOUR IN EVERY WAY" vibe going on like you find in a lot of BJD communities (*cough*DenOfAngels*cough*).

OP

Thank you! That forum looks promising. Not gonna lie, one of the things I find most off-putting about the BJD hobby is this sort of attitude of "we are soooo much better than those plebs who like Monster High and Barbie" and all the drama about what constitutes a "real" BJD. It all seems so petty and snobby to me.

honestly it's not that bad

There are a couple issues that people will scream at each other about on the internet now and then, and a few vocal jerks, but most people who collect dolls are just... people who collect dolls. There's no, like, mono-fandom hivemind of crazy.

And lots of resin doll collectors (even on DoA) collect fashion dolls and such-- in fact, there are, like, two threads in the 'off topic' section right now on different types of dolls that members collect, that aren't considered 'on topic' for the main forum.

Just look for the more chill people, if you want to get involved, and enjoy your doll without worrying about the community-at-large if that's more your speed. The bad side tends to get over-exaggerated, but it's not that different from other fandoms and hobbies I've been involved in. (also, Dan! Ah, I don't like Resinsoul's bodies the best, of all the companies I'm familiar with, but I just really think Dan is beautiful...)

Oh it's that bad. All my best drama stories come from my dates in the BJD fandom.

Like the time someone was stirring the pot and a mod went to suspend them. The suspend option was right next to the 'make a mod' option, and the mod misclicked.

The pot stirrer realized they had access to the secret mod-only forum where the mods went to be salty and petty about the stupid idiots they had to wrangle and screencapped as much of that salt as they could.

DoA WENT DOWN. The pot-stirrer was informed that if they released any of those screenshots they'd be doxxed, on the main page with no forums live, and blamed for DoA being taken down FOREVER.

It was intense.

There was also the lady who went around meetups creepily hitting on younger BJD owners and when they turned her down she went on the forums and claimed they had lesbian-raped her. Thankfully after about the 4th or 5th time it happened people started noticing a pattern.

Oh man, OP, I had no CLUE about the WEIRDNESS some of the doll fandom can have. (I wandered into it because one of the cult leaders I'm researching is REALLY into dolls. ...it's even creepier because he was describing himself as a "bishie" at forty. D:!)
