This just in: people will slash anything and everything. Your fandom is not safe.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
...Congratulations?

This just sounds really petty and stupid. "This just in! Fangirls fetishize gay sex and gay characters sooooo much that they'll make up characters on the spot just so they can imagine two cocks dueling!"

Awesome. I can tell you're really proud of that.

We're talking about a comic full of existential imagery and the main characters are a young girl and a man with an old TV set for a head. Come on. Not to mention there is already canon lesbians (a pair of ballerina slippers and ribbons with a knife for a head and a bunch of musical instruments given sentience), so it's pretty obvious it's the slash fangirls that need their gay male fix like it's a drug. RGB's only canon hints at romance at all are with Madras, and it's very ambiguous what their actual relationship entails (or entailed), and whether it's just business for her (and him), or if there was ever something there.

Side note: Secret OP I agree with everything you've said. I've found myself checking it out less and less as she updates it at a glacial pace only for every new page to move incrementally. I came into the fandom late so I had a great backlog which made the story seem to flow quicker, but now it's like watching paint dry. I still enjoy the comic, but I'm finding myself enjoying it less and less. The fandom isn't exactly helping either. I have a confession, it took me like a week to finally figure out how the hell Magnus was and why he was showing up in like every third fanart.

You heard it here, fangirls. This comic has Deep Themes, so it's above your mindless carnal instincts, and it already has a canon same-sex couple, so the diversity quota is full up. The only possible reasons you could slash it now are 1) you don't Get It, and 2) you aren't attracted to women and not interested in f/f as a result.

And that's, like, ridiculous. Stop being stupid and correct your sexuality post-haste.

That'll stop 'em.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
No, try "this comic isn't about slash, or romance at all". It's not about the lesbian characters or their romance, it's not about RGB fucking anything, and if you actually read said comic sex is about the farthest thing thematically from it possible. It's a world of sentient objects.

Lmfao. I guess we can't restrain our "carnal instincts" long enough to enjoy a webcomic without having to make up fan-created peens to smash against the main male character?

You sound absolutely ridiculous. Congratulations on being part of the section of fandom who can't enjoy anything, even gen stuff, unless there's a whiff of cock on cock?

So cool. So brave.

Nah I like plenty of gen shit, personally, but people always slash it. Always. Whatever it is. There's nothing you can do, even in a world of sentient objects. Lesbians don't help. There is no escape.

But thank you for noticing me, senpai.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
So why exactly do you think that this is cute? If anything it becomes blatantly obvious that it's just fetishizing at that point. It starts to look like a neurosis or a tick.

"*Eyetwitch* You know this story is really cool, I love it--*eyetwitch* IT NEED MORE GAY SEX! PENIS! PENIS RUBBING PENIS! PENIS GOING INTO ASSHOLE! BLOWJOBS!--and the attention to detail in world building really fascinates me in particular. *Eyetwitch*"

*Shrug* I like slash just fine, but I do absolutely think there's something...off with people who do this. When you can't enjoy something gen on it's own merits I start to wonder why someone doesn't just move on to something that has what they're looking for. The Property of Hate is never going to be Epic Gay TV Head Love Story unless the author does a huge 180, so why try and force that? It's so out in left field from the tone of the series itself.

not to excuse fetishization, but you throwing lesbians out there as an alternative is kind of bizarre, gay couples and lesbian couples are not interchangeable. there are dynamics you're going to get with one that won't be identical to the other, even without mentioning anatomy.

also you keep repeating how the series isn't about romance... -most- fandoms with shipping aren't romance based canons. this is hardly new.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
I threw out the lesbian couple because I usually see some very vocal slashers claim they're doing it for "representation" reasons, which...literally every time I see this it's literally about two pretty white dudes touching one another. Also, "dynamics" mean literally zero in a canon like this. We would have no idea these characters were even lesbians if RGB hadn't been written as saying "and her wife", the characters are literally a pair of ballet slippers with a knife head and some cobbled together instruments. These are about as de-sexed as you can get, as are many of this universe's characters. (RGB himself is only vaguely man shaped, he's got an invisible body and has a TV for a head and the only reason we can tell he's man shaped is because of his clothes. It's pretty much shown that he's not really truly human in any sense of the word though.)

I wanted to make clear that despite not being about romance this series already has diverse, interesting characters (recently there has been a genderfluid character introduced that has quite an interesting dynamic with RGB as well), there's no need to make up Random Whitecock Prismhead Man.

Most fandoms with shipping at least don't need to literally make up a fan character to get their slash kicks. I feel like that's being deliberately obtuse, because you know there's a big difference between bromantic buddies and something like this. Shipping doesn't come out of thin air--usually. Shows have two male characters who are close, buddies, or have something intense about their relationship that draws shippers in.

This series? No. Not at all. It's not the kind of series one gets into if they're in the need for some dick on dick, it's very much a gen story that deals with complex themes and symbolism set to a backdrop of some almost Dahli-esque dreamscapes.

After the Onceler fandom, nothing surprises me
lb_lee: The Blue Beetle, Ted Kord, doubled over laughing. (bwa-hah-ha)

So glad someone mentioned Onceler, because that's what I was thinking of.

How slashy is the Don't Hug Me I'm Scared fandom? I know this artist has done some popular work for that fandom, so it wouldn't surprise me if fans of that series had ported over some of their fandom dynamics.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Hmnn. Not very? Or, I mean, I guess I'll say "not any more than usual". The creator seemed very enamoured with the het couple of the clock and the notepad (what even am I writing), so if she had fans who migrated from her Don't Hug Me I'm Scared days they probably weren't expecting slash.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-09 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
makes sense, it's quite slow and confident in its portrayel. not that there's anything wrong with that, but it makes sense that it would breed a fandom that really needs to buy into the hype to justify its own existance.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's one of those pieces of media that don't really mesh well with "fandom" as we know it. Right now TPOH is at a point where I personally think it's eventually going to flutter out into nothingness because nothing ever happens, or there will be a twist coming that makes me think the slow pace and build was absolutely genius. I guess we'll see!

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
It's her hands - Mod's hyperflexible and her hands are super fucked. She had to quit as a storyboarder. I'm neither here nor there on TPOH - glad it exists, can see what she's doing there, not massively my wheelhouse - but I approve of her wholeheartedly as a person, and I hope to god she doesn't make 'em any worse trying to keep up the pace.

ok, this looks cool. Another webcomic to look up!

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
It is a great comic. This secret does bring up some legitimate issues regarding the fandom, and it's a very peculiarly paced comic (it's almost 250 pages into the story and very little has actually "happened", it's been mostly very small adventures and world building, which would be nice if we got more than one page every Sunday, once you're caught up it can be kind of frustrating to keep engaged), but nonetheless it's pretty cool. The burgeoning relationship between RGB and Hero is really sweet too (which is why I think secret OP may be so irritated at the slash fandom, so far this comic really seems to be building on RGB learning to feel emotions for this little girl, and the slash fandom for this series is kind of...cheapening the tone of the comic a bit in my own personal opinion? I don't know, I just try and ignore that side of fandom myself, but I can see why it bothers others).

Here's a direct link to the first page of the comic:

I already Googled it, but thanks for taking the time to link me! :B It sounds really cute. I just super dig the design of computer head guy (RGB?) and his dialogue so far too. I'm only a few pages in though so far.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Hah, not a problem! Sorry I was too late. :P

RGB has an old TV set for a head! :D His name comes from the RGB colour palette that older TVs had.

If you like his dialogue I think you'll enjoy most of the characters in general, they all have really distinct, cool ways of speaking.

Ha, I actually thought of that this morning while I was in transit to work, wondering if that was where the name came from - initially I had no idea (and I thought his head was an old computer monitor until it was revealed to be a TV in the comic).

I think I'm about 150 pages in, maybe I'll catch up tonight. It's really pretty so far and definitely kind of creepy but very interesting.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I gave up on this comic ages ago. It's gorgeous but I feel like nothing is actually happening, you know? It's just not for me.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who is trying to stay invested, I feel you. This is the kind of story where you really need a backlog to stay invested for any length of time. :/ I've found myself having a hard time enjoying it now that I'm all caught up and each page is only like 1-2 minutes worth of real-time action within the story.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
what are some of you people's issues with slash

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Reading the secret?

Nothing. OP says they like slash. I love slash, and I have the same issue as OP. This fandom in particular is a very WTF sort of fandom for there to be a huge slash following, especially as it doesn't even involve two canon characters, one had to literally be made up by a fan in order for there to be slash.

This isn't about hating slash, it's about finding it weird that some people can't fan about something and enjoy it unless there's slash involved, even if they have to make it up.
