I too am baffled by the popularity - but mostly the teen Tumblr type popularity. As a musical nerd, there are loads of amazing musicals and I absolutely think Hamilton deserves its hype - both for its smart music and how Lin Manuel Miranda really went for historical accuracy that gets people hyped up about history (minus a few little quirks and pacing changes). But I don't get why the teen Tumblr crowd loves this show, like where did they hear about it. It's one thing for a musical to be popular and another to have this sort of fandom.

Well, Lin Manuel Miranda has a tumblr and engages to an extent with the fandom.

SJWs.

No, really. Mostly black cast doing history nerd rap? Come on. Tumblr was going to love it even if it sucked.

YES!

I think you're being a little dismissive of teens, to be honest.

I don't mean to be dismissive of teens, but pop teen fandom. Musicals don't tend to have wide-spread fandoms. I'd expect a theater-nerd teen to know Hamilton, but I wouldn't have expected 99% of Tumblr to know about it. And even having heard of the big names shows - Phantom of the Opera, Les Mis, Lion King (all ones with mainstream media film adaptations) or something like Book of Mormon is one thing, but the large-scale fandom obsession is something different.

...the Lion King musical does not have a film adaptation. The film has a musical adaptation, but to the best of my knowledge, there has never been a recursive film of the musical.

it's called The Lion King.

Disney musicals are big name because everyone knows them and their music.

Eh, I was most into musical fandoms when I was a teen (which was pre-tumblr). I was an introverted kid who liked to draw, and the students I could bond the best with were theater kids who were up-to-date on everything that was on Broadway, even though we lived in the sticks. I'm probably dwelling on my own situation too much, but I don't think it's too weird given how teens who have interest in any form of art get lumped together in high school.

"teen" "tumblr"

Why is this an argument? There are FAR more grownups who love it.

"Lin Manuel Miranda really went for historical accuracy"

Serious case of baaaaaad research, anon.

Also, this shit is popular with everyone. Like everyone from celebs to kindergartners. It's crazy!
