I enjoy the music, but I too am somewhat baffled by the hype around this show.

Maybe it's because the mainstream was previously unaware of the existence of the rap opera as an established genre, so when a hit musical with rap came out people thought "OMG THIS IS SO NEW AND INNOVATIVE AND HAS NEVAR EVAR BEEN DONE B4!!!11!1" (Not saying I think that's definitely the reason, just theorizing.)

No, it's because it's really good on every level. Like, it's not just that it has rap. It's that it has a really strong logic behind the way that it uses rap. The basic underlying idea (comparing Hamilton as an immigrant and narrative's about America's founding to typical rap narratives) is a really insightful one. And they're not using it in a shallow way - it's clear that the people creating the show really thought through the implications of that idea and they're deeply embedded in the whole structure of the show. It's using a corpus of existing styles and ideas in the best way possible.

Plus, the lyrics are really good, the characterization on its own works really well, it's clever in a ton of ways that have nothing to do with rap, the cast is amazing, and it came out at a perfect historical moment for the things that it was saying.

You don't have to like the music but it's not hard to think of why it was as hyped as it was.

there's a really dumb typo in here and also a word choice i don't stand behind sorry

he basic underlying idea (comparing Hamilton as an immigrant and narrative's about America's founding to typical rap narratives) is a really insightful one.

Writing a musical about an actual black person was clearly too risky.

I'm ashamed to live in a world where no one can see the hypocrisy that is Hamilton.

He didn't start by thinking "I'll write a rap musical, who should it be about?", he started knowing he'd write about Hamilton and then deciding that his rags-to-riches type life story fit well with rap. He was never going to write about a black person, you're being an idiot.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, they're not an idiot. You might be though. The fact that a musical about an actual black founding father hasn't been made but this was very successful shows how we can't as a society still don't seem ready for POC works. Hamilton isn't evil for doing so, but damn they should have just made a musical about the actual POC who built America. Having all these black actors mock each other over knowing "who does the real planting" just seems stupid, like white people attacking each other for being white.

I too am baffled by the popularity - but mostly the teen Tumblr type popularity. As a musical nerd, there are loads of amazing musicals and I absolutely think Hamilton deserves its hype - both for its smart music and how Lin Manuel Miranda really went for historical accuracy that gets people hyped up about history (minus a few little quirks and pacing changes). But I don't get why the teen Tumblr crowd loves this show, like where did they hear about it. It's one thing for a musical to be popular and another to have this sort of fandom.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-09 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Lin Manuel Miranda has a tumblr and engages to an extent with the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-09 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
SJWs.

No, really. Mostly black cast doing history nerd rap? Come on. Tumblr was going to love it even if it sucked.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
YES!

(Anonymous) 2016-05-09 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you're being a little dismissive of teens, to be honest.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I don't mean to be dismissive of teens, but pop teen fandom. Musicals don't tend to have wide-spread fandoms. I'd expect a theater-nerd teen to know Hamilton, but I wouldn't have expected 99% of Tumblr to know about it. And even having heard of the big names shows - Phantom of the Opera, Les Mis, Lion King (all ones with mainstream media film adaptations) or something like Book of Mormon is one thing, but the large-scale fandom obsession is something different.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
...the Lion King musical does not have a film adaptation. The film has a musical adaptation, but to the best of my knowledge, there has never been a recursive film of the musical.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
it's called The Lion King.

Disney musicals are big name because everyone knows them and their music.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I was most into musical fandoms when I was a teen (which was pre-tumblr). I was an introverted kid who liked to draw, and the students I could bond the best with were theater kids who were up-to-date on everything that was on Broadway, even though we lived in the sticks. I'm probably dwelling on my own situation too much, but I don't think it's too weird given how teens who have interest in any form of art get lumped together in high school.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"teen" "tumblr"

Why is this an argument? There are FAR more grownups who love it.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
"Lin Manuel Miranda really went for historical accuracy"

Serious case of baaaaaad research, anon.

Also, this shit is popular with everyone. Like everyone from celebs to kindergartners. It's crazy!

(Anonymous) 2016-05-09 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's more because this is a rap opera (and really, not just rap) that is done extremely well.
