I wasn't very engaged with it either...I like In the Heights far more.

I think Hamilton probably does deserve the accolades it's earning, but my God, I am not a perfect person and I am SO FUCKING TIRED of everyone I know creaming themselves over this thing.

Got to a point I saw the creator on John Oliver a couple weeks back and just sagged into the couch, exhausted.

Which is really my problem, not Hamilton's.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-09 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
what

I get not liking the hip hop/rap/pop style but you are objectively wrong, Lin Manuel Miranda's lyrics are absolutely extraordinary. They are smart as fuck and the rhymes are fucking mind-blowing.

Kind of sounds like you missed the point, too. It wasn't meant to be a documentary, it was meant to be a modern adaptation that showcases what America looks and sounds like now. That's not a "tumblr" message, that's a modern adaptation like any modern adaptation.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-09 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
The lyrics *are* good but the music is forgettable. I also listened to it on Spotify and I didn't find myself humming along to any of it.

"It wasn't meant to be a documentary, it was meant to be a modern adaptation that showcases what America looks and sounds like now."

Silly you, expecting people to grasp that concept applied to history when they can't even grasp modernized adaptations of freakin' Sherlock Holmes.

This. Rap and hip hop are not genres I naturally gravitate towards (with some exceptions), but the lyrics in Hamilton are incredibly well-crafted and show real artistry. I'm not saying everyone needs to think that it's the greatest musical ever, but I do think that if the lyrics had been presented as poems to be read aloud like Shakespearean dialouge many of the people who claim not to like it would give it a better chance (save for some of the modern dialogue in there).

And for that matter, despite it not being my genre, I do enjoy the music as well (admittedly, musically, my favorite songs are King George's and the jazzier ones like What'd I Miss and The Room Where it Happened, but that's a personal preference).

What song has your fave lyrics? For me, Hurricane's lyrics blow me away.

I enjoy the music, but I too am somewhat baffled by the hype around this show.

Maybe it's because the mainstream was previously unaware of the existence of the rap opera as an established genre, so when a hit musical with rap came out people thought "OMG THIS IS SO NEW AND INNOVATIVE AND HAS NEVAR EVAR BEEN DONE B4!!!11!1" (Not saying I think that's definitely the reason, just theorizing.)

I don't understand how anyone can properly judge a musical without actually seeing the musical.

Individual songs, sure, but a musical is more than just the sum of it's parts.

YMMV but the musical quality is several stratospheres above glee club

Just cuz it was rap doesn't mean it was easy to write

OP, I could kiss you.

FINALLY, someone who knows how I feel. I just don't get it. It's not that I'm not impressed by the show's achievement or what it represents or the work that goes into it….but I thought it would be really intelligent and groundbreaking and it's…not. It's very middle-of-the-road.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-09 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
A big part of me wishes that LMM just let this show be recorded on DVD or shown in movie theaters, like Phantom 25 because not a lot of people can't get tickets to this show now.

I doubt watching a national tour of this would be the same. They won't have the same punch as the original Broadway cast does. It's like "Wicked" for me. I can't get into the new actresses that plays Elphaba and Glinda because they're not Chenzel.

When I saw Hamilton I felt like the Holy Spirit snatched my wig. Fucking scalped me. It was awesome.

The thing about musicals is that they should be experienced. You can't just listen to a soundtrack and go "oh, I now know everything I need to know about this" as if it's merely an audio experience. I hated Wicked and Anything Goes (and found the music kinda grating) until I saw them live and now they're among my favorite musicals.

I gotta be honest, I had no strong feelings for or against it. But recently started listening to it on Amazon Prime music, and damn, I started tearing up. That caught me by surprise!

I've only been listening to it slowly, haven't finished it. I can only handle so much emotion at once...

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I was really disappointed with it too. The music gave me a really bad case of secondhand embarrassment, it's so cheesy and clumsy. The way it blew up in popularity absolutely baffles me.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like the musical as much as some people, beyond the fact that I find it really creepy that it's a bunch of non-WASP players being hired to lionize a bunch of incredibly racist WASPs. But I didn't think the music was all that bad. It's not all that good either.

Let's agree the show is a beneficiary of hype, especially by old WASPs who love that it romanticizes & excuses the same generation of evil slaver rebels from whom those old WASPs derive their wealth & power. Just in case you wondered if they really still own this country's media.

I think I'd really love it if I saw it in person (ha! good freaking luck to me), but because it's not something I can hum along to mindlessly while doing my work, it's hard for me to appreciate it on Spotify. When I can focus on it, I realize there's a lot of depth there, but my attention wanders without the corresponding action on a stage, so I quickly lose the thread. Maybe if I listened to it more and learned the notes, it would go better for me. I don't know.

That all said, the entire thing seems tailor-made for the internet squee endlessly over, and some of the fans are getting obnoxious. I'm thrilled that a largely POC cast is getting their dues in this mega-hit - greater representation is fabulous. I don't need a diatribe about how racist Broadway is (I agree with you - preaching to the choir here... no really, please stop yelling at me about it), or how I can't like "The Book of Mormon" too, because it was written by two white guys.

I grow weary of a lot of things that get a lot of hype very fast because of the fandom, so I am glad I listened to this musical before it went nuclear on my social media. I can see going into listening it with a lot of negative feelings if the fandom had gotten to me before the work itself.

I don't blame you, OP.

Not musical about George Washington Carver instead?

Oh, wait. He was gay AND black. That's not marketable, unlike a musical which is actually about a white guy dying. What a disgrace PoC are actually taking these roles.

(And while I'm here, screw the composer's new cantina song for Star Wars. That was just embarrassing.)

I really wanted to like it because I thought the music and the lyrics were nice enough but I just can't get over the voice of the main character/writer.I find it so incredibly unpleasant to listen to.

I avoided this musical and its fandom as long as I could.

And then I got a request to play the music during my livestream. And I succumbed.

I mean, my politics/law geek friend (who couldn't care less about musicals) went and saw it. I can't remember him EVER expressing liking for a musical to me before. My musicals friend isn't into it, but she's like, the uber-musical buff.

This is the first time I've heard anyone ever say they did not love Hamilton. Love, not mere like. Liking is not good enough. I'm reporting you all to the Federal Reserve Bank of America. We'll see what they have to say about this!

Joking. I clearly love Hamilton but I respect that you don't. (But we're winning that Tony.)

You realize you're missing more than half the experience not seeing it, right? Most people come out of it *sobbing*. But okay, feel free to hate. The rest of us will continue to love it.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Meh, I enjoy it a lot, but then again I also enjoy the "pop-rap crap" style of music. To each their own. There's very few styles that can be said to be objectively awful when it comes to art or entertainment.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-10 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"tumblr", "teens"

I stopped reading. I guess it's shit if those two things are involved? Guess what: they get paid even if you think you heard it "free" on Spotify.
