Mulan is kind of a trans* icon? "when will my reflection show who I am inside" doesn't have to be figurative.

She didn't disguise herself as guy for dysphoria, anon.

whaaat. I mean okay, by all means if trans folks like her and relate to her that's awesome but it is way annoying to say "she's a trans icon" because her plot involves her doing something "unfeminine" and she prefers being a soldier than being a bride.

More the being able to relate to a Disney character's feelings. I don't think Mulan is trans*, but her central problem mirrors (no pun intended) the trans* feeling of not being able to recognize yourself when you see your own reflection.

I get what you're saying but I don't think Mulan ever couldn't recognize her reflection, she just didn't know who she was. She may or may not have felt comfortable in all that makeup but I don't think there was ever a sense that she felt uncomfortable in her body, just generic "Who am I?" hero crap. but hey, to each their own.

Aside from one mtf tumblr user making an argument for Jasmine being a transwoman (which was way more tenuous than this) ...there's not a lot out there for us in Disneyland.

Mulan's sentiment touches a lot of trans* people. It's okay to not get it, but it's a real thing.

It also mirrors the cis female problem of not recognizing yourself when you've slapped on makeup and dresses because society demands it, but good for you for finding some meaning in it?
