I actually prefer the latter. OOC writing is the bane of my existence, and the interesting plot and competent editing might even convince people that the characters are being written right, which is the worst. Someone who can truly tap into a character's voice is so much more rare than someone whose writing is technically fine.

Not to say I won't grit my teeth though.

That's very true. I can only say I prefer the OOC over the bad grammar because I've lost all hope on finding on-character fics for my main fandom.

I've returned to mediocre fic many times just because I like some small moments of character writing that really captured how a THAT character would exist in THAT situation perfectly. This pairing has like 0 fics so I take what I can get.

Same. In character is just very important to me. The characters are the reason I read.

Oh dear god, YES. Finding fic that reads like the canon character voice is instant win, no matter how shoddy everything else about it is.

I mean, love of canon is why I'm reading fic in the first place.
