If they're full of spelling errors and the plot goes nowhere, chances are I won't have time to notice if the characterization is good and just drop it. Now, if it has an interesting plot I may hate-read it if the OOCness is even that worse than in other fics.

I prefer the first one because I either pretend it's original fic or have fun coming up with increasingly silly reasons for the OOC-ness while enjoying the plot I'm liking.

Hmm, this one's a little tricky.

OOC is rather distracting, but if the story's well thought out and interesting, then I'm more willing to over look it.

Spelling/grammar errors and being boring, but IC sounds like putting pearls on a pig. It's still a pig, even though you tried to dress it up by making everyone IC. Then again everyone is IC, which is a good thing.

I'd probably have to go with OOC but well written as being the lesser of two evils.

Ha! Yes, I feel your pain, OP. Sometimes I'll read fic and marvel at how well it's written in terms of description and dialogue and the prose is fantastic... but if it weren't for the names I wouldn't recognize the characters at all. On the one hand it's brilliant that people have such imaginative concepts for the inner lives of their favorite characters, but on the other hand I'm not sure they see it as I do... really really OOC.

As someone who doesn't have a beta and got ridiculed for her grammar errors on f!s I keep worrying whether I'm the latter.

I get comments complimenting the character's IC voices, but my fanfics are comparatively unpopular.

I prefer OOC with a good plot - at least I can still enjoy the story. It is possible that the author had a different take on characterization, after all. But there are dozens of IC fics I closed after the first paragraph because the author couldn't bother with spelling and punctuation. This sort of slack annoys the fuck out of me.

I actually prefer the latter. OOC writing is the bane of my existence, and the interesting plot and competent editing might even convince people that the characters are being written right, which is the worst. Someone who can truly tap into a character's voice is so much more rare than someone whose writing is technically fine.

Not to say I won't grit my teeth though.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-11 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
That's very true. I can only say I prefer the OOC over the bad grammar because I've lost all hope on finding on-character fics for my main fandom.

I've returned to mediocre fic many times just because I like some small moments of character writing that really captured how a THAT character would exist in THAT situation perfectly. This pairing has like 0 fics so I take what I can get.

Same. In character is just very important to me. The characters are the reason I read.

Oh dear god, YES. Finding fic that reads like the canon character voice is instant win, no matter how shoddy everything else about it is.

I mean, love of canon is why I'm reading fic in the first place.

Well, obviously the first one I'd choose since you gave that category less flaws. Sloppy SPAG can go hand-in-hand with anything though, and it's my most immediate reason to ever back-button.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-11 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I came across that the other day. "This is all nice porn, but it's all AU and these aren't the characters I was looking for?"

(Anonymous) 2016-05-11 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
OOC is something that I just can't stand in fic. It could have the most amazing plot ever, but if the characters are OOC I just nope the fuck out of there. I can deal with some spelling and grammar mistakes, but if they're all over the place, then I'd definitely back-button out of that too.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-11 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Good plot makes me forgive OOC-ness. I just pretend it's a standalone work.
