It's not a big deal.

Don't get so worked up.

Worst. Thing. Ever. To say to someone having a panic attack.

Seriously. :(

Seconded. Along with "Just pull yourself together". If it was no big deal and I could pull myself together, don't you think I fucking would? Folks who don't have to deal with mental health issues are so fucking oblivious. If I had a broken leg, would you tell me to walk it off?

What I hate is when they tell me to relax and then get impatient and annoyed because I didn't immediately take their advice and suddenly become perfectly calm. Some people seem to think it's just that easy and I'm refusing to do it.

I feel you, though I think my least favorite is when people badger me about why I'm having one. They want it to be something big and important when it's usually something like "I probably had too much sugar or didn't get enough sleep, so now I think I'm dying".

So agreed.

Yup. Any attempt to invalidate someone's feelings when that person is, in fact, "so worked up" is a bad idea and frankly, a shitty thing to do.

I've had panic attacks. They're not a big deal. It's an irrational thing that my body goes through and I get over it. Why do people make them out to be some big thing?

When you're brain convinces itself that you're dying, or going to pass out, it IS a big thing. Especially if it happens frequently, in public, or for no damn reason at all. It IS irrational, and you KNOW it is, but try telling a freaking out brain that. Doesn't work very well.

I'm talking chronic panic attacks here, not just "Oh no! I have a test coming up tomorrow!" type of scenarios.

I've had genuine thinking-I'm-having-a-heart-attack panic attacks myself, and honestly, what helped most was repeatedly telling myself "It's not a big deal. You're having a panic attack. It sucks, but you're in no danger. Just keep it together so you don't frighten anyone else, and it will pass in its own time. As soon as possible, get someplace you can lie down."

What you're describing is a big deal. It's a complex situation that requires special attention and should be handled in a particular way. Saying "it's not a big deal" implies that THAT statement alone should be sufficient for you to "get over it", but clearly it takes much more than that.

I get that, but I have little patience for panic attacks. Ideally for me, I'd leave the situation, that usually doesn't bode well. If I stay I get snippyand frustrated which also doesn't bode well. What's my best option her?
