Respectfully, I disagree. His real life persona on his current show is pretty much the same as his character was on TCR, altho i will give you that it is toned down for network TV, but also because he's no longer playing that character. However, that old TCR character comes through every once in awhile, like in the Big Furry Hat sketch as well as the Hungry for Power Games sketch. I don't see the current show as better 9r worse than TCR, but simply as a different incarnation that's a blend of Colbert the character and Colbert the talk show host.

With the mention of politics, my guess is that OP misses the SC character in the way he conducted his interviews, not necessarily in the sketches.

He still does the same in sketches too though, just not with political intent, like the one where he took the Meyers-Brigg's test.

This is how I see it, too.

I remember reading interviews with Jon Stewart after he left "The Daily Show" where he talked about how he just got exhausted with having to constantly talk about the political BS going on out there on a daily basis (he's still politically invested, yes, but he handles it in other ways now). I wonder if that's not part of the reason for why Colbert handles political discussion a little differently on his show now, too. Like you said, his TCR character does still pop up from time to time on the show, yeah, but there is, obviously, a difference between how his character handles political discussions and how his regular self handles them, and I sense he finds the latter a little more refreshing and easier to do now.

If that makes sense :p.
