(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)At least you have some self-awareness that you don't really need representation. A lot of the aroace people on tumblr do not have this awareness and are extremely homophobic and whiny about their lack of representation and act like gay people are oppressing them.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-16 01:08 am (UTC)(link)I can't think of even ONE asexual character in a mainstream movie or TV show, where it was canon that the character was asexual, and stayed that way. (The only example I can think of is Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory, but the show never actually stated he was asexual, and he ended up having sex, anyway.) Well, I suppose there was Sirens, but it wasn't very popular and got canceled. And I've read one book with an asexual character, who ended up dating a non-asexual person and agreed to have sex with them.
No, asexual people are not discrimnated against and don't have laws passed against them. We aren't beat up and denied rights for our sexuality. I know that.
But, when you live in a liberal bubble and are surrounded by all these "progressive", "sex-positive" people, people are far more jerkish to you than they are gay people. If you're gay, then anyone who's a dick to you for your sexuality is just a homophobic asshole and their opinion can be dismissed because all the "good" people that matter are totally fine with you. But when you're asexual and people are assholes to you you can't just dismiss them as bigots, and the so-called "good" people are against you, too.
It just would be really nice to see some asexual characters because right now I feel like...do people really think asexuals are THAT weird and screwed up and broken that they can't even make fictional characters like us?
I realize everyone's going to attack this comment and tell me I'm an awful person, but I can't help how I feel. Being asexual when you're surrounded by people who are obsessed with sex, and you can't even turn on the damn radio without hearing some song about sex, or drive past a billboard that's using a scantilly clad woman to sell something, is just...really fucking lonely and depressing.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-16 01:58 am (UTC)(link)Yes, you can help being a homophobic asshole. You just choose not to because you think your ~lonely sadness~ over being surrounded by ~gross sexuals~ is worse than the threat of being literally murdered for your sexuality.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-16 02:29 am (UTC)(link)But in MY FUCKING COMMUNITY, where everyone's all ~progressive~ and ~liberal~ and ~sex-positive~ hardly anyone gives gay people any shit, and when they do, they're immediately dismissed as bigoted jackasses that no one pays any attention to. Yet these supposed open-minded people call us "fucking freaks" and sociopaths and no one so much as says "hey, that's not exactly nice" because they all feel the same way.
I KNOW that I have it way better than gay people and there are no laws discriminating against me. I never said otherwise.
I'm not a homophobic asshole. I don't want gay people to be discriminated against, I want them to have all the same exact rights as everyone else. I'm GLAD that in my community there are very few people that are assholes to them, and the ones that do exist are shunned by everyone. That's HOW IT SHOULD BE.
All I'm saying is I wish people wouldn't be dicks to me over my sexuality. That's it. People being dicks is not oppression or discrimination, for the 500th time, I know that, and it's in nowhere near the same realm as what gay people have had to go through.
That doesn't mean it doesn't still suck. Just because people are dying in wars doesn't mean someone can't still complain if they break their leg. Just because other people have it significantly worse than you do doesn't mean you're not allowed to complain, ever.
That's all I'm saying.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-17 04:01 am (UTC)(link)You're kidding yourself if you think there's no commonly-accepted homophobia or stereotyping of LGBT people in these liberal bubbles. Hell, look at "progressive" fandom.

If you don't want negative responses, maybe avoid using loaded and judgmental phrases like "obsessed with sex". Also, you realize this culture is just as alienating for LGBT people, women, and everyone else it marginalizes/fetishizes/fails to represent? Do you think non-asexual women enjoy it when their bodies are used to market and sell products to an assumed hetero male audience?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-16 02:03 am (UTC)(link)I think a big problem is that--especially in children's media--it's hard to confirm a character as ace unless they're aroace. I'd be all for cartoon characters saying they were fine with being single and being surrounded with friends rather than romantic partners. It'd be great! But I've seen people say it'd be great if Elsa was homoromantic asexual and... yeah, sure, but if Disney gave her a girlfriend I don't think she's gonna wink and nod to the camera and say "don't worry! I'm asexual so I'm not sexually attracted to her!" so the audience doesn't think she's your run-of-the-mill lesbian.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-16 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)"are extremely homophobic"
Hahah! Nah mate. You don't hate aroace people. You hate the heterosexual ones who act like they're discriminated against despite having the advantages straight people do. The LGBT community is fucking hypersexual as a whole, so yeah, even gay asexual people are discriminated against in the community.

Wow, that's not homophobic at all.
