(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)please Disney please
there will be a Frozen sequel apparently (well duh, but it's been officially announced) so fingers crossed I guess? Not that Disney has any balls with this stuff but they've had a few minor background canon gay characters. Actually even Frozen had a canon gay character right? The shop keeper?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)Anna would be happier with someone who actively enjoys dances and parties and huge social gatherings, not with someone who at best tolerates them. Introvert/Extrovert pairings can work! But they take a ton of work and you really have to be motivated and accept that you're very different people and that's ok.
The only situation they met in was a rushing weird end-of-the-world sort of situation and I just can't see them having a lot in common otherwise.
But with Elsa I could picture them spending quiet evenings sitting around, him playing the lute and her reading and just quietly enjoying each-other's company. Just my own thoughts

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)As a lesbian though, Elsa read so clearly as a lesbian that I'm still sure the parallels were intentional, even if never becomes canon. Let It Go was a coming out anthem, and the fear of oppression, etc... I think there's a reason that so many gay people immediately read her as gay, it just really hit home.
While I do think having more Disney princesses without boyfriends would be awesome, I really want Elsa to be the gay one. I so wish Disney will just go for it. I doubt they will, but I at least hope Elsa never gets a boyfriend and they continue to at least include lesbian subtext.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)At least you have some self-awareness that you don't really need representation. A lot of the aroace people on tumblr do not have this awareness and are extremely homophobic and whiny about their lack of representation and act like gay people are oppressing them.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)I'm aro/ace, and personally I've never particularly wanted representation (for other aro/ace people's sake, yes, but for my own personal sake, I'm just not interested). That said, I'm also not sure I consider ace people less in need of representation than LGB people (as opposed to about equal).
Though I am open to hearing civil arguments about why that is not the case. Like if, for example, someone believed that more fictional LGB representation would make horrible, homophobic "religious freedom" bills less likely to pass, then that would be a very good argument for why having fictional LGB representation in the media is more important right now than having asexual representation. I'm just not personally convinced that fictional representation will have much impact on things like government legislation.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-16 01:55 am (UTC)(link)OP here!
(Anonymous) 2016-05-16 04:12 am (UTC)(link)As for why I think aro/aces are less in need of representation, it's like some other people have said: we're not the ones who get assaulted, bullied, kicked out, fired, or put through conversion therapy. 13-year-olds on the internet don't say "that's so ace" when they mean "that's dumb". We don't even have a slur associated with us. We're invisible, and while that's not ideal and I'd like it to change someday, the prejudice we receive is passive, not active; it's obliviousness, not hatred. It isn't the same as being murdered or having people picket our existence or tell us to kill ourselves.
(Maybe I'm being unfair to my fellow aro/aces by saying this, though. I tend to feel like I specifically, and my problems, are less important than other people's, which sometimes leads to me saying things I might not say in the context of anybody else's life.)
More representation, especially in media aimed at children, is one method of hacking away at homophobia. It's slow. It's subtle. But I think it does something. A lesbian character who is well-rounded and portrayed positively takes a tiny bit away from the stereotypes and gunk that people kinda take for granted. No, TV shows won't do much on the federal level, but the more we can normalize the presence of LGBTQIA+ people, the better.
Really, the only reason the thought of a gay Elsa annoys me is because...it's not my headcanon. That's all. Tbh, I think I'd be outright pissed if they made Elsa straight. I don't automatically notice the parallels, but I can see them when they're pointed out, and yeah, her role is pretty much coded as "gay character is outed". I wouldn't be satisfied, but it would fit and I'd accept it.
