I'm sorry OP but cheating is something I can't stand for no matter the reason.
It's one of the worst fanfic tropes (maybe the worst) in slash fandoms.

Yeah, i'm a bit too touchy on this subject.

I wouldn't really say cheating is a trope that is particular to slash fandom? I think there are enough het fics that deal with it, as well.

Also, if anything, slash fandom is way more fond of the trope of "decided they worked better as friends" to get rid of canon female love intrests.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-16 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, cheating's always been an across the board thing in my experience as well.

Sadly, it's also my experience that I've seen a lot of canon female love interests turned into shrill, controlling bitches as a means of writing them off (and like cheating, that's something I've seen in both slash AND het fics) :/. I very much appreciate it when stories do the kind of trope you mention as a means of breaking up a canon pairing. It spares the story a lot of potentially unnecessary drama and character bashing, which makes reading it more enjoyable for me.

I've never seen cheating as a real trope in slash fic, or any fic, really. It gets written, and sometimes people feel it's totally justified because it lets their OTP be together, but I feel like I see it far less than splitting up canon pairs first so there is no cheating (or killing someone off) or just shipping unattached characters.

how is it a slash trope, lol

Also sucks you're touchy about it? but luckily, you're not forced to read it so.

It's OP's preference, you don't have to like it.

Some people really hate infidelity, even in fic, so I understand why you want to keep this a secret. I think it's probably because cheating is something that feels so possible in our lives (as opposed to many other dark!fic tropes), that people react more strongly to it.

But at the end of the day I wouldn't feel to bad about it; we like what we like afterall. And your headcanon does not even sound particularily creepy or wrong.

There are some great fics out there where he is torn between is family and Roy. They range from Roy friendship to Roy romance and everything in between.

(Personally I prefer the hardcore friendship ones dealing with Roy's issue and building up his friendship base but I won't turn down a romance. Although I do tend to stay away from the explicitly cheating type ones. )

Poly tho.

If there's ever a character made for poly, it's Roy.

I can enjoy a story like that if it's interesting enough, but it's hard for me to root for the character doing the cheating, honestly. I don't have any problems with you or anyone liking it though, write or read what you want.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-16 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't ship them romantically because I have a really hard time picturing Hughes cheating on Gracia. He just doesn't seem like that kind of guy.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-17 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but to be honest that's kind of why I ship it. I can picture Hughes and Roy having already had a thing going on before Hughes met Maria. Cheating isn't always black and white either, especially if we're talking about an idea like the OP had where the society is very hush-hush against it.

Alternatively, I've seen some interesting stories where Maria shares Hughes willingly, and even some where Roy becomes their third in a fully polyamorous sort of situation.

POLY THO ;)

(Anonymous) 2016-05-16 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I ship 'em, too. Whether back during the war, or Roy being that habit that Hughes can't quit and doesn't consider it cheating because it's with a guy and he's not leaving his family and the setting is not the 21st century.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-17 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
TV, books, movies, comics, fanfic, anything I check out the moment someone's unfaithful. Sorry, not interested in your story about cheating cheaters who cheat. It's the biggest turnoff in the word for me.

And then there's this. Somehow being torn between two loves, the guilt of hiding things from Hughes' sweet wife, hiding things from society (and work), the tragic end to it, all the shared experiences of war and guilt from that... it's like a food you hate except when it's cooked just that one way.

What the fuck.

+1

I see exactly why OP feels like this has to be a secret, mostly because this is literally the exact same way I feel about this couple. I abhor cheating fics. I don't care if I want to see an OTP together like hell, the moment it becomes about cheating on another person in order to do it I am out of there, seeeeee ya.

.......However, I still ship this pairing big time. It's the combination of circumstances. I feel like Roy would be that thing that Hughes just can't quit. I've seen some doujinshis that deal with this. The combination of supporting one another through war time, their strong friendship, Hughes' promise to support Roy always...yeah, I could see this being extenuating circumstances.

Love this pairing. Love this pairing + Gracia. Love this pairing + Gracia + Riza.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-17 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
You know if I didn't believe Hughes was so absolutely enamored with his wife, I could get behind that.

Hughes and Mustang are such great morally grey characters. Even in the series they're introduced essentially as good guys and it takes a while for the series to unfold their pasts and the horrible things they've done and why. So moving that sort of storytelling into their personal lives could work really well and make for an interesting read.

Heh. I was never of a fan of this pairing only because I don't care much for Roy but hell yeah FMA secret and a pairing other than Roy/Ed! You do you, OP!!

(Anonymous) 2016-05-17 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
Lots of dumbass blowback from whiny babies in these comments, wow. Hughes/Roy is the best.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-17 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm generally turned off by cheating fics, but this scenario really works for me! Queer people finding love in repressive societies is my big exception, I guess. (See also: my headcanon that Charlotte Collins née Lucas finds herself a nice, discreet girlfriend to compensate for her husband's deficiencies.)

(Anonymous) 2016-05-17 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really into cheating fic like that, where the married character is super torn by it but can't help themselves. People always suggest poly as a solution but it just doesn't work because the cheating is PART of it.
