It's one of the worst fanfic tropes (maybe the worst) in slash fandoms.
Yeah, i'm a bit too touchy on this subject.

Also, if anything, slash fandom is way more fond of the trope of "decided they worked better as friends" to get rid of canon female love intrests.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-16 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)Sadly, it's also my experience that I've seen a lot of canon female love interests turned into shrill, controlling bitches as a means of writing them off (and like cheating, that's something I've seen in both slash AND het fics) :/. I very much appreciate it when stories do the kind of trope you mention as a means of breaking up a canon pairing. It spares the story a lot of potentially unnecessary drama and character bashing, which makes reading it more enjoyable for me.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-16 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)Also sucks you're touchy about it? but luckily, you're not forced to read it so.

But at the end of the day I wouldn't feel to bad about it; we like what we like afterall. And your headcanon does not even sound particularily creepy or wrong.

(Personally I prefer the hardcore friendship ones dealing with Roy's issue and building up his friendship base but I won't turn down a romance. Although I do tend to stay away from the explicitly cheating type ones. )

If there's ever a character made for poly, it's Roy.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-17 12:18 am (UTC)(link)Alternatively, I've seen some interesting stories where Maria shares Hughes willingly, and even some where Roy becomes their third in a fully polyamorous sort of situation.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-17 12:07 am (UTC)(link)And then there's this. Somehow being torn between two loves, the guilt of hiding things from Hughes' sweet wife, hiding things from society (and work), the tragic end to it, all the shared experiences of war and guilt from that... it's like a food you hate except when it's cooked just that one way.
What the fuck.
+1
(Anonymous) 2016-05-17 12:51 am (UTC)(link).......However, I still ship this pairing big time. It's the combination of circumstances. I feel like Roy would be that thing that Hughes just can't quit. I've seen some doujinshis that deal with this. The combination of supporting one another through war time, their strong friendship, Hughes' promise to support Roy always...yeah, I could see this being extenuating circumstances.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-17 05:15 am (UTC)(link)Hughes and Mustang are such great morally grey characters. Even in the series they're introduced essentially as good guys and it takes a while for the series to unfold their pasts and the horrible things they've done and why. So moving that sort of storytelling into their personal lives could work really well and make for an interesting read.
